My obvious question is: will the R-179s be compatible with the R-160s and if not, why not? I remember back in the days when SMEEs were state of the art, NYCTA contracts specified that new cars be fully compatible with any and all existing NYCTA equipment from R-10s up to the last previous contract. For the sake of fleet stability it should still be a non negotiable absolute requirement that the R-179s MUST be fully compatible with all current NTTs!!!!! |

Can't. It will definitely get the R42, and I can see them *trying* to get the R32, but I don't see a net addition of only 25 cars covering the fleet expansion required for restoring the W and running the Q to 96st. |

Looks like that was a photoshop of a Bombardier R142... look at the trucks...Looks like the photo was really taken in Unionport yard, but I'm certain its a photoshopped photo of a R142, the Car body is clearly a digital rendering while the trucks and other equipment under the train is in real time. Photo probably taken when the R142 was brand new back in 1999 or so. As those trucks are clean & fresh... |

Randy et al:Not likely for many technical reasons. But, mainly: Different trucks and different air suspensions; Different control groups. The R-160's have either the Alstom "Onix" control group (both on Kawasakis and Alstoms, same as R-142) or the disavowed Siemens group on Coney Island R-160B's 8843-9102. They can't be mixed in normal operation. Most likely R-179 will have an updated version of R-142A/R-143 (former ADTranz) control group. They didn't work well together with the Onix systems on the IRT R-142's. It looks from the picture that Bombardier is projecting use of its own (R-142) trucks. No surprise, frankly. The R-160's have an updated version of the R-142A truck made by Kawasaki. Those two don't like to play together, either. The problems were incompatibility with the air suspension that caused computer faults. Related to many different functions (weight measurement, braking, ride quality for example). Kawasaki trucks have more rigid "chevron" primary suspension with air bag dampers. Bombardier trucks have air bag primary with hydraulic dampers. Basically the two on-board computer systems kept fighting over which one should get priority over air pressure equalizations and continuously tried to pre-empt each other. The result was usually a BIE. Note also that the train depicted is an 8-car set--2 4-car units. That's what the C is supposed to get. Regards, George Chiasson Jr. (Widecab5@aol.com) |

I think the R32 will be completely retired by the R179. Keep in mind that in addition to the extra 25 cars, there's the roughly 36 cars that have seemingly materialized out of thin air to make full length C trains.Theoretical car assignments have already been drafted for life after R32 with the SAS in operation. |

Would you care to elaborate? Most likely R-179 will have an updated version of R-142A/R-143 (former ADTranz) control group. From the article in the OP: The cars will be powered by highly reliable BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion equipment with new,energy-efficient inverters. The cars' onboard systems will be integrated by Bombardier's industry-leading MITRAC train control and management system with internet protocol technology. The propulsion and control equipment will be supplied by Bombardier's Propulsion and Controls business unit in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. Thanks for the post. Very informative. People don't realize that manufacturers have proprietary systems they put into cars, and such systems are often not compatible. The older equipment was mechanically simpler than today's fleet. |

As a side note to SMEE interoperability. Some R32's are riding on former R10 trucks that made it under newer SMEE equipment even after all the R10's were scrapped. So much for interoperability with newer car classes. |

R179 four (4) car sets will be sent to the East to replace the remaining R42's, and to flesh out the small number of R143's according to the Gods at 130 Livingston Street. Why do individuals believe that a line served by a particular car class, and train length today, such as the C, will continue to run the same train lengths tomorrow, and not run 600 foot trains made up by a 60 foot long car class? 480 foot train lengths on the "C" line are inadequate, especially during rush hour along Fulton Street, where the majority of station exist are located towards the platform ends. This results in "C" train customers sprinting on the platforms to make it to a crowded last car. |

I don't know of anyone referring to the R1/9 subway car class as boring, considering that there were once over 1700 of those cars running around the system. The R143/160/179 are essentially the 21st century version of the R1/9. Unfortunately differences in proprietary technology has help limit interoperability between NTT car classes. |

Widecab5 is correct. The majority of the R179s will go to Fulton in 4 car sets, with a handful going to ENY for service expansion and to replace the R42s, and an even smaller number in 5 car sets to go... wherever. The C isn't exactly bursting at the seams with ridership. I would like 10 car trains, but 8 is enough. I would rather see frequency increase first. |

In the R-38s' final years, it wasn't unusual to see a pair or two of those cars running in a train of R-32s, and R-40Ms ran in trains of R-42s. Of course, there was also the R-40M/R-42 "odd couple", as well. All these examples are from the past decade. |

When they were in their old age, they were insufferable. Rolling ovens, decrepit, and in some cases outright disgusting. The 1500-1802 series were particularly bad with the fiberglas seats. They are gone now, but it's our nostalgia that makes us miss them. When you were standing in a crush-loaded R-6 on the "F" line, you wished you were anywhere else but where you were. As museum pieces they are charming. The R-1 and R-4 were slightly different than the others in terms of some of the fittings. The R-6-2 had slightly different trims and fittings than did the R-6-1 and R-6-3 as well as different fans. wayne |

Presuming that the C continues to use 480’ trains in the future, I could see the R179’s being assigned as follows:180 cars in 4-car sets assigned to 207th Street (144 cars for C service plus spares) 60 cars in 4-car sets assigned to East New York (40 cars for the J/Z plus increasing the spare fleet) 60 cars in 5-car sets for fleet expansion |

Back in the summer of 1969, it wasn't unusual to ride a train consisting of R-32's and R-42's. Also, in 1970, I rode an F train to Coney Island that consisted of R-38's, 40's and 40m's. |

Also, thr IRT standard design had different electrical/mechanical features, although they looked alike. The 1910-11 Headleys were Hi-Voltage, the Flivvers were a combination of Hi/Lo-voltage(Hi-V brakes and controller with Lo-voltage funtioning.) The Steinways had different gearing neccessary for climbing the steep grade of the Steinway tunnels. So the new NTT's are not the first look alike cars with different mechanical/electrical symtems in place. What do you think, Randyo |

A 60 foot car seems more practical assuming the MTA is standardizing on the R143/160 design. We already know R179s are going to look the same. They might as well do the same with the R211s, but it's like you said Dan, to early to tell. |

MTA already hinted R-211s will be fleet standardized meaning its the same boring R-143 look, interior, design. 60 ft length is the future.... bye-bye 75 ft cars. |

Who says they need to restore the W when the Q gets routed to 96th? I think the Astoria line is overserved outside rush hours on weekdays. |

By 2019 (the date the R179 is fully delivered) I am hoping the MTA brass decide on a new style, at least cosmetically. |

I think it's absolutely certain the R32/42 will be entirely retired by the R179. They want to be rid of these beasts, and in 2017 the R32's will all be over half a century old, with the R42's close to that milestone. In the meantime, it might make more sense to invest in restoring as many of the structurally sound R44's left (despite them being picked clean of spare parts) for use on the SIR so that at least it has the best R44's possible. The R211 is a long way away, perhaps a decade. Patching and praying won't work. |

The shop tracks at 207 St are only 540 feet long - too short for a ten car 600 foot train. If they keep the C at 8 cars (480 feet), they could inspect/maintain an entire train without having to uncouple and move cars. |

I'm glad to see the 75 ft cars go the way of the dinosaur since they really weren't practical for the way the NYCTS was designed and built. |
