Randy et al:Not likely for many technical reasons. But, mainly: Different trucks and different air suspensions; Different control groups. The R-160's have either the Alstom "Onix" control group (both on Kawasakis and Alstoms, same as R-142) or the disavowed Siemens group on Coney Island R-160B's 8843-9102. They can't be mixed in normal operation. Most likely R-179 will have an updated version of R-142A/R-143 (former ADTranz) control group. They didn't work well together with the Onix systems on the IRT R-142's. It looks from the picture that Bombardier is projecting use of its own (R-142) trucks. No surprise, frankly. The R-160's have an updated version of the R-142A truck made by Kawasaki. Those two don't like to play together, either. The problems were incompatibility with the air suspension that caused computer faults. Related to many different functions (weight measurement, braking, ride quality for example). Kawasaki trucks have more rigid "chevron" primary suspension with air bag dampers. Bombardier trucks have air bag primary with hydraulic dampers. Basically the two on-board computer systems kept fighting over which one should get priority over air pressure equalizations and continuously tried to pre-empt each other. The result was usually a BIE. Note also that the train depicted is an 8-car set--2 4-car units. That's what the C is supposed to get. Regards, George Chiasson Jr. (Widecab5@aol.com) |
