True, the locals between Jamaica and Flatbush ran at subway headways and only cost 10 cents (competitive with the other rapid transit systems). Before the extension of the BRT lines along Jamaica and Liberty Aves the LIRR was the only rail link for these neighborhoods in Queens. The nickel subway routes probably ate away at patronage and it was probably obsolete and uneeded by 1939.

I don't think the el had anything to do with the declining businesses. I think it had more to do with neighborhood (actually the perception of the neighborhood) and the growing popularity of malls. The department stores of Hempstead declined at roughly the same time.

Do you really think the closing of Sutphin on the el would have increased ridership at the Woodhaven Station? I don't see the connection.
By the way, most of the people getting off the LIRR at Jamaica to get the subway walked to Hillside to get the E & F. I remember a steady stream of people walking from the LIRR to Hillside.
Of course I personally as a railfan would rather have taken the El. As unsafe as it was, I used to love riding between cars holding the holdbars all the way from Sutphin to Myrtle, where I would get off and take the old Q cars to Wyckoff and change for a BMT Standard on the LL to Manhattan.

Jamaica was in trouble already before the el came down, but it didn't need to be completely plunged into decline by taking it's foot traffic away. The el certainly didn't help the situation, it made a bad situation even worse.
But that being said, Broadway was also a healthy shopping district too back in the day, perhaps not to the extent of Jamaica of course, but a healthy drag just the same, and it fell all on it's own, while the trains continued to rumble overhead.

And as a child, I watched it as well. While the two anchor stores in Jamaica (Mays and Gertz) were tottering before the el closure, the rest of the neighborhood collapsed by 1980. Then came crack and everyone who wanted to shop started going to Green Acres. My family continued to use Jamaica as a major shopping destination into the 1980's, but by 1984 we were mall rats.

And it was incredibly dumb to demolish the el at the same time a major court building was going up. That building in itself was a major draw for people.

I actually live in South Ozone Park and I live pretty close to the ROW and I feel that they really should reactivate the line somehow as a subway line or as a LIRR line. I just hope that maybe one day this ROW can be used transit wise. One thing though, they have to get all of those buses out of the tracks since I believe they are there illegally. Another thing is that they have to clear up the area (maybe develop it a little, theres a lot of junkyards/auto body shops, maybe put in a shopping center or something), But overall, I really would like to see the ROW reopened again. If they do ever do this they have to reopen the Woodhaven junction. Does anyone have photos of this station?

Here's a photo of the Autumn Ave (then called Railroad Ave) station from Art Huneke's web site:

I remember the trains running above ground on Atlantic Ave when they relocated the original tracks to the sides so they could build the subway down the middle. That's why they closed nearly all the stations. I even remember an occasional MP41 train running.

I'm not sure of the direction myself, but I think you're right. I still live in the area near the old Clarenceville station (111 St):

Those buildings in the background still exist.

Here's another interesting photo showing the LIRR when it was an el at Pennsylvania and Atlantic Aves while they were digging the subway. That bank building on the corner still exists:

I remember the 111th St station on the Jamaica el very well where the gate cars from the Lexington Ave el used to terminate. It was very interesting to watch the activity there before 1950. I never got to the Atlantic Ave area of 111th St while the railroad was still on the surface.

I remember a bank called the East New York Savings Bank at the intersection shown in your second picture, but I thought it was on the northeast corner, not the northwest. I'm sure that ENYSB has long since lost its identity.

Is there any chance that you have a picture of the Chestnut St cutoff from the Fulton St end?

I think it's because the ENY section was 4 tracks wide, but they needed only 2 tracks, so rather than abandoning half the structure, they replaced it with a 2 track subway.

You're thinking of the Gem. The original Hamburg Bank was built in 1932 on the corner. The Gem theatre was in the middle of the block on Fulton between Crescent and Hemlock. I was working for the bank in 1954 when they purchased the recently closed Gem, tore it down, and expanded the bank taking up more than half of the block. I saw many, many movies in the old Gem in the 1940's an early 1950's

The Earle was actually on Liberty Ave in City Line. IIRC it was on Liberty near Lincoln Ave.

A little off topic but funny you should mention scams by banks. Bank of NY was recently taken over by Chase. Chase's savings interest rate is about 1% higher than BONY. The only thing is they are keeping the old interest rate for ex-BONY depositors. When I asked them why, the manager said with a smile, we're grandfathering them in. When I said grandfathering is usually beneficial to the customer she couldn't answer. So if anyone out there has a BONY savings account you have to go in, and sign a couple of forms to get higher interest.
