Having the "H" Shuttle serve that area might just work. Then there is the matter of a couple hundred School Beese.....As for the Woodhaven underground station - still structurally intact! Might there be a lot to put a stationhouse on the NE corner of Atlantic and 102nd? A poll should definitely be taken, if nothing less. Might want to mention the time factor: from Rockaway Parkway (A) station to Hoyt-Schermerhorn vs. Woodhaven to Flatbush via LIRR. I don't think there's much comparison. wayne |

I don't think anywhere near enough people would use it to justify it's reactivation. It would have been great to have it open during the transit strike 2 years ago. Then again, how many people use Nostrand Ave? |

I've often wondered why Woodhaven residents haven't protested more about losing LIRR service. Woodhaven lost two LIRR stops within 15 years - the elevated station in 1962, when service to Ozone Park ended, and the underground one in 1976, when the MTA closed the station citing underutilization. |

We don't want or need it, at least not to the level that it should have not been eliminated. However, the truncation of the Jamaica Ave. el at Queens Blvd a year after Woodhaven closed probably would have increased patronage slightly, since there was no real subway/LIRR connection anymore in Jamaica. But that was rendered unimportant after the Archer Ave. line opened 11 years later. |

East New York has plenty of people using that station, mostly rush hours....but interestingly, most people using it in the morning are going Jamaica bound, and most people in the afternoon, getting off there from Flatbush bound trains. I have used ENY many of times at those times, and there plenty of people getting on or off. |

How about LIRR from Penn station to Howard Beach? It would connect to the Airtrain. Yes I know it is not a "ONE SEAT RIDE TO THE JFK AIR TERMINALS but hey at least you get a fast ride for aireline passengers and people who want a fast ride to Midtown. Again kick out the bus compamies that inhahabbit the row, They should not be an obstacle nor should NOT IN MY BACK YARD JERKIES, the Railroad was there for many years, they come first. Also since the 2000 CENSUS I think Woodstation area has grown alot just ask the people if the want better service!! |

Before AirTrain that would have been a good idea, but now with Airtrain, I don't think it would be too much faster than just taking the LIRR from Penn to Jamaica and using AirTrain from there, than taking the LIRR from Penn to Howard Beach to get AirTrain.....not to mention that the Jamaica connection of AirTrain opens up the entire LIRR (except Port Washington). |

Unusual, since that indicated that the tunnel under Atlantic Ave in Queens continued construction through the first year of the war, while other subway projects (like the Fulton St. line east of ENY) were suspended. |

I have some pictures of the old Woodhaven Junction station as well as Union Course (near where Rockaway Blvd intersects Atlantic Ave). The fact that airtrain is there now is the only reason I'm thinking a subway would be better for Rockaway ROW. The ONLY remaining reason for LIRR to Howard Beach is for the sake of a faster trip from Brooklyn(and possibly in the future, downtown manhattan) to Howard Beach. It'll be a lot faster than the subway. The thing is though, you then have the remainder of the Rockaway ROW with nothing on it. Do you still do LIRR? Do you do a subway to just Woodhaven? Do you do LRT? |

And IIRC there were two stations - one on the Rockaway leg, the other on the mainline. Not sure if the two legs were grade-separated (I kind of think they were), but the "airport cut-off" was there at ground level (before they depressed it).wayne |

I know, he's asking me if I think LRT would be usefull, and I would probably say yes, more useful than LIRR, but perhaps not as useful as subway. Light could work perhaps.I feel light rail may work better though on a grade level line, where people can jump on and off easy, and the Rockaway line is on an enbankment....but it's still better than no use or service there, and definitely better than LIRR service. |

I was askin what your opinion was on LRT. Again, if airtrain had not been build already, I would've said LIRR 100%. However, now that airtrain has been built, I think LIRR is out. From both Brooklyn and Manhattan, you can just take LIRR to Jamaica and get airtrain there. The only reason I'd say LRT over subway is because LRT doesn't connect to the supposedly overcrowded Queens Blvd trunk. LRT can just run the surface on Queens Blvd(which would also bring rail transit to a stretch of Queens Blvd that doesn't have it, as small as that stretch is) |

Before 1900 or so, both lines crossed at grade, after the Rockaway line was seperated and elevated over the Atlantic line. There were also many, many stations eliminated when the tunnel in Queens opened, Woodhaven Junction being the only one retained. I can only recall the names of 2 (Union Course and Morris Park). |

The Union Course station was located at 80th St. and Atlantic Ave, where Rockaway Blvd now crosses at an angle, creating "The Triangle". There was another just across the Brooklyn border at Autumn Ave. These were local stations with side platforms.
