While the two anchor stores in Jamaica (Mays and Gertz) were tottering before the el closure, the rest of the neighborhood collapsed by 1980. Then came crack and everyone who wanted to shop started going to Green Acres. My family continued to use Jamaica as a major shopping destination into the 1980's, but by 1984 we were mall rats. And it was incredibly dumb to demolish the el at the same time a major court building was going up. That building in itself was a major draw for people. |
