'As to Queens though, they got all the new and shiny'I often wondered why in the last days of the R-1/9s, the BMT eastern div got the latest models of pre war equiptment( #1600-1802), repainted inside & out & outfitted with those gray backbreaking, hemmorriod harming seats while the Queens Blvd line stayed with the older R series cars (# 900-1300), unrepainted with the old wicker seats?? On the surface of it, it would have made more sense to have the "newer" R-9s working the more heavily used QB line assuming that the R-9s would hold up better being somewhat newer. Guess that situation ran under the radar of the Queens Democratic Club Just wonderin |

Actually, the older wrecks assigned to the (E) were truly on their last legs. Even over on the D, we got some real junkers with the logic used elsewhere that they only rolled as put-ins for rush and got put back as soon as they got there. IF they got there. :)The lower numbered ones though all had serious sclerosis of the air pipes and all sorts of problems that they weren't going to fix. They did set aside a few cars for new piping, compressors and such but I don't know what ever came of that. The 7's and 9's though were in better shape than the rest. But I'm guessing that the wrecks only came out to play for rush hours like over on the D. |

Many of the R-7s and 9s assigned to the BMT East were among the groups refitted with varying degrees of new piping with rebuilt compressors , cleaned piping with rebuilt compressors, cleaned piping with new compressors and new piping and new compressors. They were initially renumbered with numbers A00 through E99 and the letters of the various groups indicated what type of brake system overhaul the cars had. The temporary numbers were pasted over the original numbers with black numbers on white background. These cars were actually on the Queens IND until their transfer to the BMT when their original numbers were restored. |

Didn't know if they ever made it past the test phase given that new cars were coming in and CIY was really getting rired of all the bailing gum and chewing wire wasting their time with arnines trying to make service. So then some of those cars actually made and stayed in revenue? |

When their original numbers were restored, they were assigned to the BMT East, KK, M and LL and later the J when the M was routed to Bkln and the R-27s/30s went to the M. I operated them myself when I was a V/R M/M on the M and LL and occasionally the KK. |

Musta been nice having arnines that actually blew air and had compressors that turned off every now and then. :)Some of the consists I got handed were amazing in their ability to keep warbling the entire trip. The D got LOTS of those because it was usually one round trip and back down the ladder after you did it. So for those put-ins, we got every derelict that would release. :)90 pounds ... yeah, sometimes. Often, I was lucky to get that needle barely above 70. But if it released, it went. :( |

I was commuting from Woodhaven Blvd to 121st Street in the Spring of 1968. Around 8am, I would catch a Jamaica-bound Standard for the returning JJ skip-stop, which one-by-one became an R-9 over a period of several months. I can still remember the smell of fresh enamel paint in them as they came on. |

When the MTA acquired the SIRT fom B&O, William Ronan, then Chairman of the MTA appointed by his buddy Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, came out to Staten Island to visit the SIRT facility.I don't think he was ever on Staten Island before. When he heard "Staten Island Rapid Transit" he thought it was similar to "Bay Area Rapid Transit." When he saw it he was in a state of shock. |
