The 1st Green R-10 Fantrip: June 8, 1986. |
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Wed Jun 8 09:15:52 2011 Twenty-five years ago today on Sunday, June 8, 1986, the Electric Railroaders' Association operated a chartered fantrip train with four green-painted R-10 cars in use on various IND-BMT Division routes. The cars used in that consist were #3136-2966-3101-3013, and the starting and ending point of the fantrip was 59th Street-Columbus Circle, using the abandoned middle platform, and with the lunch stop at Coney Island. The routes covered were the lines of 6th Avenue-Manhattan, Houston Street, Rutgers Tubes, Smith Street, Culver, West End, 4th Avenue-Brooklyn, Montague Street, Nassau-Centre Streets, Broadway-Brooklyn, Myrtle Avenue, and Chrystie Street Cut (current "M" track connection). After the end of the trip around the 5:00pm hour (if I recall correctly), the train ran lite back to 207th Street Yard. -William A. Padron ["Smith-9th St."] |

Sadly, the green R-10s didn't last long. They found out that a fresh coat of paint did not make up for a good deal of maintenance neglect and obsolescence. |

R-10's to come out of the 207th Street Shop in February 1986 with the new green-painted scheme, #3037 and #3169, each lasted only three of the planned five years extending its service life. Oh, before anyone asks, sorry, no speed run up Central Park West on this fantrip.-William A. Padron ["Sixth Av.-34th St."] |

About 3.5 years, until all the R68A's were on the road. I vividly recall seeing the last one at 34th/Penn on the Friday before Labor Day, 1989. I think when the C line was expanded to an all day operation, they could not handle it. In the early days of the "round" C, they even used R10's on weekends. |

One story I heard had it that they were taken off the weekend schedule was that one citizen complained to MTA NYC Transit about the loud rumble (from the heavy trucks and flatwheels most likely) from the R-10's, stating it shook off the dishes to the floor from her Central Park West apartment. Then, when the R-38's were sidelined for one summer weekend in 1989 (as I recall), only one green R-10 "C" train was assigned back and I had seen it on a Sunday run. The gradual retirements of the green R-10's started around March 1989, with the first one of them to be removed from service was car #3193. -William A. Padron ["(C) 8 Avenue Local"] |

They weren't as bad in the early 70's as they were in the late 80's. Those are still the loudest cars I've ever had the displeasure of riding (though the pre-GOH R38's came close). I know the green R10's look great, but they were basically the same crap with a coat of pain on them. Flat wheels were a constant problem. I felt bad for the conductors assigned to them. |

The green R-10s did get a sort of mini GOH. I recall seeing updated ME-42 brake valves removed from either scrapped R-16s or R-17 through 22s on the 10s (there IS a slight difference between the ME-42s on the 10s though 15s and later models). That was the most visible upgrade I saw and I'm sure there were others that I wasn't aware of. A friend of mine who is a TSS told me that the R-10s were the oldest equipment he operated as a M/M and that when he operated them it felt like he was operating a good substantial piece of equipment. Although I did like the R-10s, I feel it was unfortunate that the newer R-16s had to be scrapped ahead of the older R-10s. Although the 16s were a rather trouble plagued fleet, I think that a good GOH, even a mini one like the R-10s got, might have improved their performance and enabled them to last a little longer. |

At least the R16's had electric doors, operable from the inside. But they were horribly abused towards the end, a minor GOH would not have been possible. There were also not enough of them in 1984, when the decision was made. The GE units were already scrapped, and only about 80 or so WH units were on the roster (infesting the J line). |

They looked good in fresh paint, but they were no longer the beasts that flat terrorized the 8 Ave Express runs. I remember them being loud as heck at speed. Also, i can recall the first time I heard a R-10 consist pass by me at speed. We were on a class trip to the Hayden Planetarium. On our return, as we were waitng for a n/b AA train at 81st St station, an A train of R-10s came barreling through and was incredibly loud. Those may have been the bad 'ol days of the 1970s deferred maintenance era, but those were the good 'ol days. |

Decibel wise, nothing beat an R10 in the Cranberry St. tunnel, in the middle of summer with the storm doors forced open and the windows all down. It was actually painful. |

One thing though..the TA did rebuild one car back in the 80's updating it to modern standards[so to speak]..a TOTAL REBUILD..even the car ends were rebuilt for large rollsigns..R44 interior.. What happened to that programe..and why didnt they continue it with the 27/30's.. was it a weight issue? |

At 81st St. and CPW n/b, it all came together. Back in the day, an R-10 Abbott was at full speed as it bore down on that station. In addition to a deafening roar, you saw a blur of teal and white. I remember both the grand entrances and the demises. I loved hearing entire trains of brand new motor brushes entering service whizzing away during sensitive rolling tests and some cars with 2CYs and others with NYABs. Nice to have all the ceiling fans and doors cut in. Some with MGs and others with Toshibas. I was one of the lucky few to remain aboard to 207 Street Yard. However for those who will remember the Southbound run Roosevelt to QP, as well as the round trip from Myrtle-Marcy more than made up for the CPW loss. 3216 sat in CIY only the next weekend as its NYAB compressor was removed. The only differences I noticed were the R17s and R22 had aluminum valve bodies while older ones were cast iron. What are the "updates" you refer to? |

According to the WABCO documentation contracts R10-R16 wereoriginally supplied with ME42 valves and R17, 21 and 22 with ME42A. Are there any functional or internal differences, other than perhaps the use of aluminum instead of cast iron? |

I am remembering the Square redbird valves as 42A and the ME43s were on R42-R68A, NYAB retrofits with two variations of the ME42s on R10-R22. As far as installations go, the aluminum ones worked on the R16. We have both in stock if you'd like to try them out. |

Watching that video clip from 5-30-13, I noticed that the n/b tracks are still rising as they approach 72nd St. 72nd itself is level, but because much of the train is still on that upslope as it enters the station, it's still gathering speed. About halfway through 72nd, the entire train is on level track and by the time the lead motor has reached the northern end of the platform, it's at full speed. That's exactly how I remember all those R-10 Abbott joyrides back in the day. Pure excitement. Ripping past 81st, you had the feeling that nothing could stop that train. |

Went to Nathan's on the meal break.Elkeeper: I was on that trip as well. The consist was 2966-3013-3101-3136, though necessarily in that order. The train ran from 59th Street-8th Avenue via 6th Avenue and Culver to Coney Island, running on the express track all the way from Bergen Street to Avenue X. Northbound we ran from Coney to Metropolitan Avenue on the Myrtle Avenue Line via West End and Nassau Street, then from there to 34th Street-6th Avenue. It was a great trip. Thank you for asking about me. I'm alive and well and working on a few projects. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
