They looked good in fresh paint, but they were no longer the beasts that flat terrorized the 8 Ave Express runs. I remember them being loud as heck at speed. Also, i can recall the first time I heard a R-10 consist pass by me at speed. We were on a class trip to the Hayden Planetarium. On our return, as we were waitng for a n/b AA train at 81st St station, an A train of R-10s came barreling through and was incredibly loud. Those may have been the bad 'ol days of the 1970s deferred maintenance era, but those were the good 'ol days. |
