Because that's the MTA way. "We are the customer service ambassadors to the MTA and provide our customers with the best service possible. If they don't feel that they can be treated like a customer then we have failed at our jobs." I've been told this many a times at Zerga Avenue in the MTA's propaganda videos.

depending on the strength of the material used, and the type of bus being installed on, they can be pretty safe.

I like the ones SF MUNI have on their Neoplans & Skodas. A few Orion VIIs have these shields too. On the MUNI buses, the compartment door is locked from inside the operators compartment. Operators may raise the plexy glass for added protection.

Pictured here is the drivers partition on a Skoda. As You can see, the operator have the protective plexyglass lowered. If he chooses to, he can raise it from the inside for added security.

This photo here shows the drivers partition on a SF MUNI Neoplan. The operator here chooses to leave this one open. Perhaps this is a kickback line or never had problems. The operator

Although I dont have a picture, LA Metro is testing a drivers partition door on NABI 40LFW # 7147. This particular partition is a single piece partition ( top half - bulletproof plexyglass ; bottom half- hard metalish material ) that is lockable from inside the drivers compartment. These compartments do not instruct passenger and curbside mirror views.

Definitely. Let me start out on that point of agreement.

By the time you get motivated the B/O can duck or take other evasive action.

Practically speaking, it's a tight space, and the farebox side of the "compartment" offers access to someone motivated to slash. This isn't a mellow person that we're talking about who is going to be taking a knife to the B/O. I think that if one is serious about a partition, it has to be all the way, and not partial. Of course, that presents practical problems too.

One of the main problems is that the B/O becomes embroiled in a confrontation with the unruly passenger. This has to be avoided. Enforcement of farebeating has to be left to police personnel.

This is pretty much exactly what's being installed on TTC buses... as a demonstration I tried to grab another operator around the shield on a test bus and couldn't reach him. So it's a matter of the perpetrator would not be able to reach the operator with a knife even if they try to get around the shield.

I know, I've been there, check out my earlier posts. I don't enforce the fare, but simply requesting the fare is enough to set one off. How do you avoid a confrontation if someone wants a transfer you can't issue. Again check my previous posts. I have not been trained by the MTA to avoid confrontation and assess situations. The NYPD trained me in conflict resolution and "verbal judo". Liberty Lines & the NYPD taught me to assess situations and how to react and when not to react, but still I found myself in a similar situation, I was lucky she wasn't armed, and the BCC didn't call the police. The MTA is part of the problem not the cure.

Heh I don't know about THAT... lots of people here would disagree with that statement, but I guess it's a case of "grass is greener on the other side" as it were.

One problem we still have here is our archaic fare collection practices. We still use fare boxes where you count what the passenger deposited by looking at the coins... no digital counters or anything. Also, our transfer system is extremely out-dated... all the suburban systems around us use time-based transfers while we still use directional transfers, which are a big source of fare disputes. There are no fare cards or smart cards here, the only cards we have are weekly and monthly passes which must be shown to the driver when boarding.

We also write out our own waybills here, ie every day we write out what times the vehicle leaves each end terminal and record what transfer number we start each trip at to determine approximate ridership.

So while the TTC is finally taking operator safety into account (after much fighting with the union) there are still areas where they need work.

How long ago were you here?

It isn't always abot the fare. Most abusive and abrasive passenger conduct revolves around unavoidable delays, not driving fast enough to suit the passenger, and just a general need to be abusive to a public employee.

And this conduct is maybe not overtly encouraged, but it is a LONG way from being aggressively discouraged.

2006, I like it. Look at the money saved by doing that, it's old skool and it works. Loaded paddles into the radio system. Archaic, but effective. How many FB defect's result in no fare collection here, a lot. Subway station fare control results in easier boarding. We at MTA bus still have to fill out daycards with passenger counts per trip. When I worked at the Bee-line just accepted the transfer, before MetroCard, along w/ monthly flash passes. It's simple and easy IMO. The smartcard of farecard system IMO is for the transit agency to collect up front weather or not it's used, but you still have the same levels of fare evasion with or w/o out and encure the same or more loss amount involving the cost of collection media installation, maint. and infrastucture. I'm looking at it as a transit professional. With the current setup including the automated announcemnet and radio/bus tracking requires less supervison and less overhead. IMO the TTC knows how to take care of what it has even if it's over 20 years old. I've never saw a system that is so clean and reliable even w/ the rigors of a large metropolitan area. Toronto seems like Diet New York. Old, busy, big however clean and people are nicer IMO.

Not the answer that MTA likes to hear, but: issue the transfer.

MTA knows which routes have fare enforcement issues, and they do little or nothing about it. The particular route involved had a lot of problems. And it's not the only one....

Ultimately, is transit losing $2 worth someone getting hurt or killed, if transit is unwilling to do anything about the broad problem?

I think actually the ideal thing to do with regards to fares is what our neighbouring transit system to the north, VIVA, does. They took fare collection completely out of the operator's hands, and instead passengers have to pay their fare and obtain a ticket at a fare vending machine on the street. Roving inspectors patrol the buses and fine anyone who is on board without a proof of payment, be it a ticket, pass, transfer or otherwise. The operator is there only to drive the bus and for information, nothing more. Another big advantage of this is allowing boarding by all doors instead of just the front.

You make some good points regarding the TTC... I guess we should just agree to disagree. We're both transit professionals and know how our respective systems work, and the drawbacks to each. I will agree the TTC has done quite well with what it has over the years, and the antiquated technology is more a result of a lack of funding than anything else.

We can agree on one thing though I'm sure... the antiquated fishbowls are still the best thing on the roads here!!

But who wants a new prison built within 50 miles from where they live?

Many of those scum actually prefer to stay in prison, and that's why many of them continue to get into trouble. They usually have trouble getting or holding jobs, which in turn makes it hard for them to have money to pay for meals and rent. Prison life provides them with shelter, 3 square meals a day, and they get to "mingle" with others they have a lot in common with.

I saw a not in service bus with B46 LIMITED signage today.

And yes, it was not a Brooklyn Division bus. I thought it was a fitting way to mourn the loss of a fellow bus operator.

Have any other depots done anything to show their respects? As in bus operators wearing black armbands or anything like that?

I mean, we at MTABus can't issue transfers on fareset 3 (express buses), the 1 and F1 keys are locked out. I couldn't physcally issue a transfer and had an incident similar to this.

Yeah - do you know College Point Depot buses used to be able to do it on the QM1/QM1A routes? I don't think that it's possible anymore, but originally, I believe that they were somehow able to, but I'm not sure how.

But overall, police have to be more involved in combating a 'lawless culture' on certain routes, e.g., the now infamous B46.
