depending on the strength of the material used, and the type of bus being installed on, they can be pretty safe.

I like the ones SF MUNI have on their Neoplans & Skodas. A few Orion VIIs have these shields too. On the MUNI buses, the compartment door is locked from inside the operators compartment. Operators may raise the plexy glass for added protection.
