I think actually the ideal thing to do with regards to fares is what our neighbouring transit system to the north, VIVA, does. They took fare collection completely out of the operator's hands, and instead passengers have to pay their fare and obtain a ticket at a fare vending machine on the street. Roving inspectors patrol the buses and fine anyone who is on board without a proof of payment, be it a ticket, pass, transfer or otherwise. The operator is there only to drive the bus and for information, nothing more. Another big advantage of this is allowing boarding by all doors instead of just the front.

You make some good points regarding the TTC... I guess we should just agree to disagree. We're both transit professionals and know how our respective systems work, and the drawbacks to each. I will agree the TTC has done quite well with what it has over the years, and the antiquated technology is more a result of a lack of funding than anything else.

We can agree on one thing though I'm sure... the antiquated fishbowls are still the best thing on the roads here!!
