I just got the text from a coworker whos friend was on the bus when it happened. I just went to my old neighborhood(Utica Ave) and observing the B46 buses going up and down Utica Ave. According to the text, the B/O died, but the newslink says otherwise. Im glad I was called for C/R before B/O(passed both with flying colors).

My thoughts and prayers with the B/O and his family.....

On the WNBC Channel 4 web site, they are reporting the driver is in very critical conditon. To the right of the story is a captioned picture of people getting onto an M15 bus on Dec. 23, 2005, the first day of regular service after the strike. Pretty tasteless at a time when one of my union brothers is fighting for his life.

That is why I stopped question anything anyone gave me. I stopped after a B/O I know got stabbed in the hand with a needle in the hand. He had to get tested every 3 mouths for over 4 years to find out if he got HIV/AIDS. After that you could ride my bus no question asked. You have no money fine, transfer no good keep it moving. I wanted to get though my day without getting into trouble or a fight with anyone. I gave them no reason to harm me in any way.

You know what, I could really say what I truly feel right now but I think at this time...we ALL (bus fans, bus operators and other transit friends on this site) need to come together for a prayer. Please bow your heads (or just read):

Friends,

Today we celebrate the life of this bus operator. None of us (as far as I know) know him but we will certainly remember him as a bus operator who was dedicated to his job. Who stood up and not give up a transfer to someone who thought could "Beat The System". I salute the late bus operator. He's a hero in my book!

I would like to extend my heart-felt condolescenes to the family, friends and the fellow bus operators, supervisors, mechanics, etc. at the Flatbush Bus Depot. Who now have to come to work knowing that one of their own...a bus operator...a fellow co-worker...and most importantly...a friend will no longer be there. However, he will ALWAYS be with you all. He'll just be watching you all from above.

Amen.

I'm sorry if this prayer was offensive to some of you but I just had to do that. My prayers are with the family at this time.

There was also one killed in 1983, if the linked article is correct. I also remember someone saying a while back that there is a picture of another driver, possibly an Ulmer Park driver, was also killed in the 1980s as the result of a customer assault. I wonder if that was the 1983 case.

I also know of another bus operator slashing on the B6 in the mid-1990s.

I thought it was discussed a number of years ago, but nothing came out of it. But consider the size of the small box the operator would be confined to. How well would ventilation be in there? Let's say they do get put into "a box". Hope the operator isn't claustropobic.

My girlfriend used to live about 5 minutes away from where this occured. We now live near the 15/43/47/46/57 connection. I ride the B46 on occasion.

GLI has an operator shield that works differently, however. It is designed so that if it is forced open, the driver is still protected. But it won't work in a frequent pickup/dropoff application.

Quote" I've waited for this opportunity. I am saddened for the loss of this young man and that his family will now have a sad holiday season and the same goes for his co-workers. Is this what you call "customer service?" Do you call the killer of this hard working soul, "a customer? I call him a two-bit, low-life murdering scum. To hell with the fucking courtesy, the good mornings, the have a nice day and the Dr. Diekmann's Blue Book of Customer Commuication. These buses and trains carry the filthiest low-down scum of the earth who are worth the basics of human dignity."Quote

Preach on brotha.....I don't even think some of them are worth the basics of human dignity....

That's the only way to do this job. You basically have to become like a carriage horse with blinders and look straight ahead. I don't hassle anyone over anything. I just drive the bus and try and make it through the day safely. You're on your own out there and have to rely on your instincts and street smarts in order to make it. I've survived over 18 years doing the job this way and plan to continue doing it this way until I hopefully make it to retirement. You never know what kind of low life subhuman scumbag will board your bus at the next stop. If the TA wants me to enforce their rules then issue me a gun and then I'll enforce the rules. I drove the B46 back when I was a rookie and remember it being a scary experience.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of brother Thomas. May he rest in peace.

Seattle has partions since Mark McLaugin was murdered and his bus drove off a bridge in the mid 90's, DC Metro has now started to use them too after assauts on employees rose. The MTA makes us fend for ourselfs, "Partions obstruct view" or "They're not customer freindly" I had an incident similar in nature ealier this year on the BxM1. A girl didn't pay her fare and then came up and asked for a transfer. I told her we cant print x-fers on express buses. Our faresets in Yonkers were changed and have no ability to issue transfers. She became enraged and threatend me and demand that the passengers give her money. I pulled over and took the bus out of service and was allowing the other passengers to exit, to keep them safe as per procedure and she physcally prevented anyone from leaving the bus, and demanded money, I asked Bus Command Center to call the police. The BCC never called the police. She held everyone on the bus even after I identified myself as an Auxiliary Police Officer, until a supervisor came in ex-NYBS supervisor car which looked like a police car and she took off.
