Ok thanks noted. It had those 4 speed limit signs IIRC, as was mentioned here already: trucks/cars/day/night.

It blows goats. When I'm heading down to ride the Holiday Shoppers Special Vintage Train from 2 Av-LES, I do like 65 down the FDR. That road is great. Dips and bobs and curves and tunnels. You can easily catch air.

What is the Fastest You Have Taken That Hill at 96th St on the southbound Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan in New York City? And did you catch air? The speed limit is 50 MPH iirc. I think I've taken it as fast as probably 70 MPH bur I don't think I've actually gotten the car to take flight yet at that spot.

If it happened during the day, the never-ending congestion would render such a feat impossible.

Even at night, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway tends to see more traffic than the average city Interstate Highway.

Since it was the summer season when I took the trip, automatics were in short supply, and from what the agent at Sixt told me, this was the last auto they had left. I usually tend to hold off on making reservations for a car rental on a trip until the last moment in case of poor weather, but due to my laptop failing on the trip, I wasn't able to give myself the lee-way that I needed to get a better car. The original plan was to drive from Berlin to Hannover on the A2, but I wasn't able to secure anything for that stretch, so I ended up driving aimlessly on a loop from Frankfurt Airport via the A3, A45, A5, and A3. So, while I saw more of Berlin, I ended up minimizing my time in Hannover, skipping out on Hannover, but I rode the Neubaustrecke Köln-Rhein/Main during daylight. Admittedly, I loved driving on the lightly traveled A45 in the hills of Hesse so it may have been well worth it.

Next time, I'd probably try and rent a Mercedes Benz C class, and do so ahead of time. Mind you, I hope to have more money saved up as the one day rental nearly cost me $300 if one includes the cost of gas and fees...

The fastest I've gone within NYC limits as a driver is about 75 in my brother's 1997 Ford Taurus SHO on the eastbound GCP near Little Neck Parkway. Fastest I've gone as a passenger is 87 mph on Union Turnpike in Bayside in my friend's '82 Chevy Cavalier (of all cars). He got pulled over by a cop but didn't get a ticket because the cop had run out, so he got let off with a warning.

It's not that hard. Traffic can already be doing 65. You hang back a little or see a break in traffic and then you hammer it in a car with halfway decent acceleration and it shouldn't take too long to get to 90. Another 30 seconds.

Keep left? I always thought the left lane was the passing lane. I was once told (not that I follow it) that if there are 3 lanes, the left is passing, the center is regular travel, and the right is for exit / entry. In practice, I find the right is for speed limit and under, the center is for just above the limit, and for passing a car in the right lane, and the left lane is for way above the limit / passing a car in the middle lane.

If exiting from the left, you have to use it, however. I try to accommodate as much as possible with not dragging along but I still try to stay as close to the limit as possible and I wait until the last 1/2 mile or so to get into the left and then most drivers understand that I'm not trying to slow them down, and that I have to be in that lane to get off.

Going west on the GCP for the JR is an example. I've been doing 50 all the way through on the right lane and then I have to go two lanes left and then just before the exit out of nowhere the speed limit changes to 40, (I end up at around 47 or 49), but I know I'm still slowing people down -- but only for a few seconds. I wish there was a sort of "I'm sorry" light I can put on behind me!

Technically you can't go over 55. So if you want to be a perfectly ideal citizen, the only reason why you're passing is because someone is going below 55 and so 55 is suitable for passing. I know that's not the way it is in practice, but I'm just answering the question as I understand it. Once over 55, you are technically speeding regardless of your lane.

IME, in practice there is a 5 mph buffer above the speed limit for passing where one won't be pulled over for speeding. Here in CT one can drive 70 and again IME even if one does get a speeding ticket, it will be tossed out in a blanket dismissal once it reaches court. "Anyone with a speed of 70 and under can go home" is what I was told. I didn't go home but I left just the same :P

I use that exit from the Grand Central to the JR Parkway many times a month, but I usually drive in the left lane my whole trip anyway. I find the left lane to be the safest lane. The right lane is unsafe as you constantly have people merging in and out infront of you and you are constantly having to brake for merging, etc. The Middle lane is safer than the right lane, but you also have people going in and out a lot from either side of you. The left lane is the safest in my opinion, as there are very few left exits in the area (at least compared to the majority being right exits), and you don't have the constant pulling in and out and merging around you there. The right lane is the least safe.

I can see why there should be a minimum speed but don't think it fair that it's not posted.

I've only seen 5; 10 is pushing it IME.

And, if you are trying to follow the law perfectly, it becomes annoying if someone is doing 53 because then it would take a long time to pass and you're next to each other for a longer period of time, which isn't very comfortable. That's why I think a buffer is suitable for passing, say 60. Most officers probably think the same way but I've never seen official signage to that effect.

Compared to the JR Parkway? Just driving it and you will see a huge difference. The Belt is no worse than the Grand Central or Northern State. It doesn't have Interstate Hwy standards, but it's not the "JR Parkway" either.

For a trip back in time to what all the Parkways once looked like, take a drive on the Bethpage Parkway.

It should be common sense for the most part, but yeah, for the novice driver, posting would be most helpful.

But why does the limit feel safest to you?
