Or rebuilt the Clearview/LIE interchange to have two lane ramps from south to east and west to north and have the Clearview and the LIE east of there be I-195. The LIE west of there can be I-395. After a few years, rename I-278 to I-495. I-678 can be I-595. Even better would be to extend I-80 to Riverhead. The remainder of the LIE can be I-180, and I-678 can become I-380, with I-278 becoming I-480.

Actually it is in fact a loop route because it runs from one interstate (I-490) to another (I-86). This can be solved by extending I-390 north along NY-390 to the Lake Ontario State Parkway. NY-390 is already to interstate standards. Before the commissioning of I-86, I-390 was a spur route. Another loop with an odd number is I-590 which runs from I-390 to I-490 and never meets I-90. This can also be solved by extending it north along NY-590 to NY-104. North of NY-104, NY-590 would have to remain as it's a surface road with traffic lights.

I-990 near Buffalo never connects to I-90 either, but it and I-590 are legit because they don't connect to any 2-digit interstates and so are "tertiary spurs," taking the number of a "secondary spur" that they connect to. Another example is I-795 outside Baltimore.

More trivia: I-90 in New York is the only interstate in the country to have the full set of 3-digit spurs from 1-9. I-990 is the highest numbered interstate anywhere.

It isn't a f---g question because this isn't a sex chatboard.

The question boils down to this: Are escalators and elevators, used to get over the "hump" created by the BMT tunnel, enough to make the station complex easy to use and access (when combined with ADA-compliant access to the street)? The consensus is yes. David thinks not, and Will thinks the MTA, SEPTA and every other transit agency known to man are run by complete idiots and he knows better.

At least David offers an opinion but doesn't want to run the whole thing. Will says to MTA's chair "You're sitting in my seat."

So this is how a polymath reacts when he finds himself in an untenable position? You lash out at those who have attacked the idea on a personal level. Why don't you try that again without the insults. James asked you a very valid question you continue to dodge.

If you have even a tiny fiber of a backbone, please specifically state how exactly this new station will alleviate any of the problems Lincoln so kindly spelled out for you. To refresh your memory, they are as follows:
It is EASY to get from the 2/3 to the A/C. FTC doesn't change that.
It is EASY to get from the 4/5 to the A/C. FTC doesn't change that.
It is HARD to get from the 2/3 to the 4/5. FTC doesn't change that.
It is EASY to get from the J/M to the A/C. FTC doesn't change that.
It is EASY to get from the SB J/M to the 2/3. FTC doesn't change that.
It is HARD to get from the NB J/M to the 2/3. FTC doesn't change that.
It is HARD to get from the SB J/M to the 4/5. FTC doesn't change that.
It is EASY to get from the NB J/M to the 4/5. FTC doesn't change that.
At no point have you offered any sort of specific justification for your stance outside of insults. Why don't you try maturing a bit and actually face the issue? If you're wrong you're wrong, just friggin admit it already so we can all get on with other issues.

How after this he can have even the slightest shred of respect amongst the posters here is utterly beyond me.

It is one thing to have your idea sunk, quite another thing to insult those who are telling you the idea is sinking.

He has been doing this for at least eight years now. He has been shown to be wrong many, many times. He has insulted the people who were right, and who showed him to be wrong, many, many times. It isn't ending via you're way. Being passive won't do it. The membership needs to be proactive. They need to actively ignore him. They need to completely shut him out. then, and only then, will there be a change.

Of course there is an easier way. Make a petition calling for Ron's banning, get all of us to sign it, and give it to Larry.

The consensus appears to be a resounding no.
No such escalators appear to exist from anything on the MTA website, and the AC platform is narrow and overcrowded. (It may even be narrow to the extent that passage from one elevator to the other would not be ADA compliant)

I hope all those businesses that had to vacate for this project turn around and sue(and win) the MTA.

Years ago, I told people that the TA could not keep all eight escalators working at 63rd/Lex on the F. One is ALWAYS out-of-service for long periods of time. Sometimes more than one.

I have not been to Parsons on the J/E lately, but I'll bet the main escalator is still out of service after more than one year.

TA is pathetic. They can't even maintain what they have, and they want to add to the system? They should just end all talk of major improvements and expansion. Not happening.

MTA with escalators and elevators is so bad, they need a quite radical evaluation of what's gone wrong. This has been a problem as far back as I can recall, i.e., 20+ years.

In all that time, about the only thing they've gotten better at is that where there's a pair of escalators, they try to preserve service in the up direction more frequently than before, when nothing more than the luck of the draw determined direction of the one remaining escalator.

And it's new escalators too. Haven't been to Flushing in a while, but when they first installed those new escalators, they were lucky to be in order two days out of the month. Dry days, at that. If it was a month that saw a few scattered days of rain, maybe no escalators at all.

It really is a sorry state of affairs. At this rate, I hope they outsource the ESA escalators if they can't shake things up.

Maybe this is why New York City is never the "Fattest City in America" in the annual Men's Fitness rankings. NY'ers get so much exercise stairclimbing New York's malfunctioning escalators.

I agree with you 100% on everything.

Your experience is the opposite of mine.

I was in New York extensively in 2004 ridoing the trains every day. I used the escalators most frequently at Main Street Flushing, and 53rd and Lexington. They were working 90% of the time and I was there at rush hour. I also used, not as oftyen, the escalators at 74th-Kackson Heights to transfer between the IRT and IND lines.

Yes there were days when they were out, but that was pretty rare. Myexperience comparing my actual rides with this chatboard is that people here tend to exaggerate the %of time escalators are out of servicer because they remember the days when they are not and don't count the days when they are.

For example, in four months of riding, the Fushing-Main Street escalator was out of service - for me - a grand total of four times. Four times out of 90 days using that station. The escalators at 74th-Broadway were never out of service for me, and the escalator at 53rd Lex was out of service for me twice in that period.

So while I want to believe you, there's too much foamer bullshit on this chatboard to make "MTA escalators are a joke" etc. very credible. It's part of why foamers are seen to be so out of touch with reality.

I'm not accusing you of being one, mind you. I'm suggesting that the reason between the discrepancy between your experience and mine isn't just pure luck.

I like Hemmerdinger's plan. You can't just leave a hole in the ground. So you finish up the below-ground aspects and you make nice at the surface and then ask the developers to propose, "What's next up?"

So you're saying it should take months, maybe years to repair a broken escalator?

The main escalator at Parsons J/E was out-of-service for at least six months, and may still out-of-service. No matter how well the escalators at 53/Lex worked for you during your visit , there's no reason for any escalator project to take so long.

Nor is there any reason for escalators in the subway to break down with such frequency, and stay out-of-service for so long.

63/Lex might be the deepest station in the system, so working escalators should be a priority at this station. Sadly, they're not.

"So you're saying it should take months, maybe years to repair a broken escalator?"

I'm saying the escalators I rode were out of service, collectively, all of them, six times out of 90 days, and were back in service in less than a day.

I do agree that MTA took too long to put some escalators in the system back in service.

"The main escalator at Parsons J/E was out-of-service for at least six months, and may still out-of-service."

I'm sorry to hear that. It did not malfunction for me when I was there last, which was three years ago.

"63/Lex might be the deepest station in the system, so working escalators should be a priority at this station. Sadly, they're not."

How do you know? Without knowing what's wrong with them you don't know what needs to be done to fix them.

Im not saying MTA is blameless. The agency is not, and it's record on escalators bears improvement. I'm saying that the discussion here on escalatrors, same as in trains, veers toward "MTA is a bunch of idiots and if only we foamers were in charge we'd fix everything right quick!"
