Your experience is the opposite of mine.

I was in New York extensively in 2004 ridoing the trains every day. I used the escalators most frequently at Main Street Flushing, and 53rd and Lexington. They were working 90% of the time and I was there at rush hour. I also used, not as oftyen, the escalators at 74th-Kackson Heights to transfer between the IRT and IND lines.

Yes there were days when they were out, but that was pretty rare. Myexperience comparing my actual rides with this chatboard is that people here tend to exaggerate the %of time escalators are out of servicer because they remember the days when they are not and don't count the days when they are.

For example, in four months of riding, the Fushing-Main Street escalator was out of service - for me - a grand total of four times. Four times out of 90 days using that station. The escalators at 74th-Broadway were never out of service for me, and the escalator at 53rd Lex was out of service for me twice in that period.

So while I want to believe you, there's too much foamer bullshit on this chatboard to make "MTA escalators are a joke" etc. very credible. It's part of why foamers are seen to be so out of touch with reality.

I'm not accusing you of being one, mind you. I'm suggesting that the reason between the discrepancy between your experience and mine isn't just pure luck.
