The issue is not station slots, but what slots. Empire et al come in on a single track that reaches a limited number of switches. If those switches are out it can not be rerouted through a different switch. So Occasional station swap may occur. But that will not help NJT if the slip switches are out. Better would to be to terminate at Harriman and let Meatball Norsk bring them home. ROAR |

So what if the bathrooms were in the vestibules? As long as I'm not kept from them! And the extra set of doors provide an extra "screen". :-)Are you sure they would have been difficult to retrofit? I recall that, early in the Turboliners' careers, that a Turboliner locomotive was tasked with pulling the Lake Shore Limited at least once. There was a picture of it in a book of early Amtrak photos (title was something about 1978-1979, I was a total idiot for not splurging and buying a copy at the time). |

How much does Amtrak pay Metro North for the use of the New Haven Line? Does Amtrak pay Metro North a bonus for dispatching Amtrak trains on time?According to DOT, Amtrak paid Metro North $11,828,895 for “electric propulsion usage and track maintenance, adjusted for an incentive or penalties for on-time performance” for the 2013 calendar year. DOT breaks down these payments as follows. 1. Electric propulsion: $10,889,614. 2. Track maintenance: $1,720,745. 3. Dispatching Incentives/Penalties: Amtrak pays Metro North a bonus for dispatching its trains on time. Metro North pays Amtrak a penalty when it fails to do so. In 2013, Amtrak received $879,771 more in penalty payments from Metro North than it paid to Metro North in bonuses. 4. Other: $98,307. |

As an aside, Years ago, Amtrak used to pay Metro North extra $$$ to have MN ticket agents (on line stations) sell Amtrak tickets. But ticket agents were not paid anything extra for the extra duties. For example, A ticket seller in Poughkeepsie which sold MN & Amtrak tickets was paid the same as a ticket seller in GCT who sold just MN tickets. For years, MN was screwing the ticket sellers big time on that one.It was kept real quiet at the time that Amtrak was re-embersing Metro North for selling Amtrak tickets. The "union" dropped the ball letting MN get away with that. |

In those days (early 90's) many Amtrak tickets were much more complicated than churning out MN one ways or monthlys. It was computerized but on a primitive level. One Example: one day a nice lady comes to my window in Poughkeepsie & says, "I was on last nights 49 to Chicago & my husband, who I was travelling with was taken off with chest pains. He was checked out & found that it was just severe indegestion. I need my reservation changed & upgraded for tomorrow nights train, giving me a larger roomette...and I'm double parked. Now it happens to be commutation time & I'm by myself & the line is backing up to under Rt 9. I politely told her that you should go to the nearest pay phone & call 1-800-USA RAIL, get a reservation number, come back & I will get you whatever you want. She leaves in a huff, screaming how uncooperative I was & files a formal complaint. I got a formal repremand for that. What I did was a No-No. No blowing off customers no matter what. Truth be told, there weren't many situations like that, but dealing with reservations, there were enough, and when you're by yourself, there all complicated. I hope that answers your question |
