In those days (early 90's) many Amtrak tickets were much more complicated than churning out MN one ways or monthlys. It was computerized but on a primitive level.
One Example: one day a nice lady comes to my window in Poughkeepsie & says, "I was on last nights 49 to Chicago & my husband, who I was travelling with was taken off with chest pains. He was checked out & found that it was just severe indegestion. I need my reservation changed & upgraded for tomorrow nights train, giving me a larger roomette...and I'm double parked.
Now it happens to be commutation time & I'm by myself & the line is backing up to under Rt 9.
I politely told her that you should go to the nearest pay phone & call 1-800-USA RAIL, get a reservation number, come back & I will get you whatever you want.
She leaves in a huff, screaming how uncooperative I was & files a formal complaint.
I got a formal repremand for that. What I did was a No-No. No blowing off customers no matter what.
Truth be told, there weren't many situations like that, but dealing with reservations, there were enough, and when you're by yourself, there all complicated.
I hope that answers your question
