Certainly could get from Milw to Chgo, and thence to South Bend (2 of Insull's interurbans North Shore, South Shore) a few blocks from Adams Wabash to Van Buren(IC) for the connection. The Electric Interurban Railways in America by George Hilton and John Due, Stanford U P 1964 gives cursory maps which indicate that it would be a circuitous route fromChicago to NYC but doable. |

It was however somewhat inconvenient because other than Gary all South Shore stations were low platform in the old days. |

Remember they were built for a system with high platforms at all stations. The 1926 IC electrification and raised embankment/grade separation project was a major upgrade. FWIW, I was back there a week ago, joyriding the South Chicago Branch (my old neighborhood) Even w/ slower trains it is still a great system though I wish they ran more often in base day. |

That line was sold to the L from a connection @ Wilson Ave north to Evanston. When the L was extended via the embankment, CNS&M was through routed to the Loop w/ a terminal @ Roosevelt Rd. Concurrently Insull (who owned the L NS, SS, CA%E) built the Skokie Valley Route which gave NS a faster run. Briefly NS trains operated to Dorchester on the Jackson Park Branch.By the time I was exploring the L the original "Shore Line Route" was dying--I never rode it. There are good histories of all of this in the two Central Electric Railfan Assn Bulletins. More recently the Shoreline Historical Assn has done a monograph on the C&E. |

Posted by Alan Follett on Sat Sep 8 18:53:51 2012, in response to Re: Terminals and ROW shared by Multiple Interurbans., posted by Avid Reader on Sat Sep 8 16:30:49 2012. The North Shore began operation over the "L" into central Chicago in 1919. At most times, the southern terminal was Roosevelt Road, two stops south of the Loop; but for a few years in the 1920's and early 1930's certain Chicago-Milwaukee name trains operated through to Dorchester on the Jackson Park Branch, adjacent to the South Shore's 63rd Street stop. This was a couple of blocks shorter than any CNS&M-CSS&SB connection in or near the Loop.It was never possible to ride through from Chicago to New York or Boston by traction; there was a gap in upstate New York. About the longest relatively direct journey possible by interurbans, possibly with a few short walking transfers or use of city systems, would have been from Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on Wisconsin Power & Light, to Oneonta, New York, on the Southern New York. (I'm going by memory here. About thirty years ago I published an article in The Timetable Collector giving the specifics of such a journey, but my copy of that issue is currently about 2500 miles away.) K-line modified their scale, then their semi-scale heavyweights to produce interurbans and commuter cars. MTH modified their semi-scale heavyweights with coaches and combines. Lionel was the closest to the original with the Pennsylvania coach and combine, with owl eyes. Later RR's still had owl eyes, and their Long Island RR version had pantographs! |

"It has trolley Poles and a Pantograph."And some Sacramento Northern cars also had removable third rail shoes. I don't have time to look up the details, but it was the result of a merger between the Oakland, Antioch & Eastern (I *think*) and something else. One line was 600 V, the other 1200. The 1200 V cars could run on the 600 line, with the motors arranged in series; but the 600 V cars couldn't run on the higher voltage. There was at least one other line -- from memory, the Albany Southern -- which used poles, pantographs, and third rail. "I wonder if it made any connections with Pacific Electric, or Southern Pacific's electric service?" It was far too north to connect with PE, but it shared trackage in Oakland with the Key System, and after the Bay Bridge opened, with Key and the Southern Pacific electrics. The Bay Bridge had both third rail and overhead, to accommodate the three railways. |

From _Trolley Car Treasury_, by Frank Rowsome:"...between New York and Boston, solely by streetcar. The total fare for this 267-mile jaunt was $3.75 and the actual running time was eighteen hours and eight minutes, to which had to be added any time spent waiting for connections and eating. By 1913 it was almost possible to make a far longer trip, one of breathtaking dimensions. It ran more than 1,000 miles from Waterville, Maine, to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It would have taken more than a week, with about 150 hours of actual riding time. But a pair of 20-mile gaps in New York State were never closed, and no one ever made the trip purely by trolley. "It was a pity that no company had the vitality to close those little gaps, if only for a short time. Because in the years that were immediately ahead, it was not the trackage that was to grow, but the gaps." |

A smaller version of that shed was used by Public Service in Journal Square for their suburban/interurban cars coming from all over Northern NJ. It was there until fairly recently, track, granite block paving and all. When I last saw it, it was used by a rental car agency and full of pigeons. Located right around the corner from the infamous Tube Bar and upstairs from H&M Journal Square station. |
