Posted by Jackson Park B Train on Sat Sep 8 16:52:23 2012, in response to Re: Terminals and ROW shared by Multiple Interurbans., posted by Avid Reader on Sat Sep 8 16:30:49 2012. long complicated history. originally connected to the Chicago & Evanston branch of the Milwaukee Rd. That line was sold to the L from a connection @ Wilson Ave north to Evanston. When the L was extended via the embankment, CNS&M was through routed to the Loop w/ a terminal @ Roosevelt Rd. Concurrently Insull (who owned the L NS, SS, CA%E) built the Skokie Valley Route which gave NS a faster run. Briefly NS trains operated to Dorchester on the Jackson Park Branch.By the time I was exploring the L the original "Shore Line Route" was dying--I never rode it. There are good histories of all of this in the two Central Electric Railfan Assn Bulletins. More recently the Shoreline Historical Assn has done a monograph on the C&E. |
