AIUI, the bigger issue with new trains was the width dimension, as there was something about the structure of the Myrtle Av El that made shaving back the platforms difficult and expensive. I'm not entirely convinced that running Redbirds with modified door-sills on there wouldn't have worked, although that would still have kept the issue of having to maintain a small fleet of oddballs. Perhaps the thinking was that a common oddball design for the Myrtle and Third Avenue Els -- the latter certainly did have weight restrictions -- would have been better than two oddball designs. |
