There is a big difference between saying it is within one's religion to say we should be good stewards of the earth. It's another thing to say the bible says there's gonna be a flood so let's build dams to stop it with taxpayer money. That's the equivalence between what the SoS said and what the RW says.. Environmental science drives the policy, not the bible. Get it? |

I agree with you that it has no place in US government but we part company on exactly what is said. I strongly disagree with Kerry in his statement that God created the earth but it doesn't outrage me like it would if he added "and evolution is bullshit" or something like that. Likewise if a rightie politician states that he believes in the 10 commandments. Fine. If he adds "and we need to display them on all public buildings" then I'm outraged. But we do agree that it's best to just keep God out of government. your pal, Fred |

First off, there is much controversy to the left's "environmental science", and it's even more questionable when they say it's because "God gave them a responsibility, clearly stated in Genesis, where God first created the Earth, and then created man".I am not saying that the right is right either in when they quote scriptures to mandate things based on 'man shall not lie with man", and so forth, but it's wrong in EITHER case. Just because you like one idea and not the other, doesn't make it right to use scripture in government mandates or policy. |

We both feel religion has no place in government policy. But that includes a speech where someone quotes Genesis and scripture to try and put out a government policy idea that we have a personal responsibility to do some policy because it's given by God.That, is just as bad as the lunatics on the right that quote fornication or man lying with man to promote their agenda. They are both agendas, and if you are outraged about one, then you should be outraged about the other. Or if you feel it's right for one agenda, then it must be right for the other agenda. Scripture has no place in government mandates, policy, or speeches. And that goes for EITHER side. Again, it doesn't matter if you like the promotion idea of one agenda and not the other, or if you feel its not as bad as another. They are both wrong. |

Problem is, there's science to back up environmental protection. The biological basis for homosexual preferences is being studied. There's no scientific basis for a misinterpreted, mistranslated book purported to be thousands of years old driving policy of a secular government. If one person states he sees religious purpose in protecting the environment, all that is is a rallying point for other like minded people to participate. It is not a policy mandate. It is not proposed legislation. It is not law. It's one guy's opinion. It is not entirely driven by religious dogma either, since the science behind it is sound to 99% of the community. |

Problem is, there's science to back up environmental protection. The biological basis for homosexual preferences is being studied.Very questionable science. It can be shown however the data is twisted to promote an idea. That said, Scripture is scripture. There's no scientific evidence that "God created the Earth and Man after that", nor that there's a "Personal responsibility given by God" to promote Environmentalism, or prevent Homosexuals from having sex with each other. Whether you agree or disagree with either of those things, is irrelevant, as scripture shouldn't be allowed to flow into government policy or ideas either way. If it's wrong for one, it's wrong for the other. If one person states he sees religious purpose in protecting the environment, all that is is a rallying point for other like minded people to participate. It is not a policy mandate And if a religious right wing nut uses scripture as a rallying point for other like minded people to not support gay marriage, it's no different. Again, just because you agree with the result, doesn't mean Scripture should be used as a reason to do anything. It is not entirely driven by religious dogma either, since the science behind it is sound to 99% of the community. No it's not. And again, quoting Genesis to promote Environmentalism is no better than Quoting Genesis to promote creationism. You can't pick and chose when to use Scripture, depending on your liking of the end result. |

Here I was seeing this as his making a point for inclusion, that environmental protection is seated not only in it's science (which is "debated" only by a few RW nut-ball outliers) but in the practice of faith. That's a very different message than "gay marriage should be banned because the bible says xyz". Thee's no science to back that up, and LOTS of evidence to argue the contrary. You obviously not getting this. One has nothing to do with the other.
