Yes:Here is what the Bergen Record Online has to say: Short Line employees reject contract, will strike at midnight: JOHN DESANTO/Times Herald-Record May 22, 2008 Short Line bus drivers will strike at midnight, having rejected Coach USA's latest offer. The decision to strike is expected to throw tomorrow's commute into chaos. "The issue is benefits, sick days, personal days," said Rich Olsen, a Short Line driver from Liberty. "They offered us one sick day a year to settle the strike. One sick day. That's not enough." The state Department of Transportation, Metro-North Railroad and NJ Transit will boost service to help Short Line customers get to their jobs in New York City during the strike. Tomorrow (FRI) only, Metro-North will run an extra train from Harriman during the morning rush to alleviate any overcrowding. The train will run only if necessary. No exact departure time has been set. Starting tomorrow and continuing throughout the strike, NJ Transit will operate two extra trains from Suffern during the morning rush. Parking is limited at Suffern but ample capacity exists in NJ Transit’s multi-story garage at the Ramsey/Route 17 station. Starting tomorrow, the DOT will increase shuttle service between the Newburgh park-and-ride on Route 17K to the Metro-North station in Beacon, where parking is scarce. Starting Tuesday, Metro-North will increase ferry service from the Newburgh waterfront to Beacon. “We certainly appreciate the support of our partner agencies,’’ said George Grieve, president of Coach USA/Short Line’s Northern District. Grieve said Coach will be working through the weekend in an attempt to organize as much replacement bus service as possible and urged customers to keep checking the company’s website for updates, www.coachusa.com The Times Herald-Record is following this story all night long and will report more information as it becomes available |

In short, only contract services (TZX, OWL, and TransitOrange) and service to Woodbury Commons AM, from Woodbury Commons PM (presumably with Gray Line New York drivers), along with regular line-run service to and from Binghamton---but not the early morning departure. Commuters in the Southern Tier are going to have to drive down to MTA territory to catch early morning trains from Port Jervis, or Ramsey-Rt. 17. |

Shortline also operates line service west of Binghamton to Olean and north to Utica out of Binghamton (Chenango Valley Bus Lines). West of Binghamton, Shortline serves Waverly,Elmira,Corning,Bath,Hornell,Alfred,Belmont (I86-NY19),and Olean.thus two thirds of the Southern Tier would be affected if this is true. |

Shitline is advertising all over Craigs List to hire SCABS to replace the striking drivers. I believe I read in CL in AR they were hiring drivers to work the strike, both class A & B. What a scumbag move. Coach USA's drivers aka Shitline are some of the lowest paid and now they want to replace them with SCABS! I worked at Shitline in 1985 and they went on strike shortly after I left and that strike turned very violent, burning buses, etc... Shitline deserves anything they get for hiring these "REPLACEMENT" workers, scabs! SOLIDARITY!!!!!! |

That situation is very similar to what Greyhound was in when Fred Currey ran that line (nearly into the ground) and hired ex truckers as replacements, a few of them who could NOT handle a highway bus worth a damn. One reportedly ran over a small girl with a bus and with fatal results. What this country needs is a NATIONWIDE GENERAL STRIKE and not just a bus company struck, but nationwide general strike. That's beside the point. The idea of Shortline hiring scabs to drive the buses is a good way of inviting violence, which seems to be the only effective way left for the average working joe to redress his or her grievances since nothing else will get the higher ups' attention. |

SOLIDARITY!!!!!!The idea of Shortline hiring scabs to drive the buses is a good way of inviting violence, which seems to be the only effective way left for the average working joe to redress his or her grievances since nothing else will get the higher ups' attention. It is virtually unheard of for modern management to engage in unlawful violence and, for the most part, replacement workers are looking only to complete the jobs to which they were assigned. Virtually all unlawful violence in these types of disagreements is brought on by striking union members. To encourage union members to engage in such violence (e.g., "[Shortline] deserves anything they get....") is to throw civility and law out the window and, in effect, engage in extortion. If Shortline acts within the law (and regardless of whether or not some people "like" it or not, the law is what it is), and the union members acts outside the law, it becomes quite clear which side will have taken the high road, and which side deserves to lose their jobs and get sent to jail. On the other hand, if the union members want to abide by the law, and act civilly, then they will exert lawful economic pressure by withholding their labor, picketing, etc., and if in fact Shortline is economically exploiting that workforce, the company will be unable to hire replacement workers in sufficient numbers; either the contract offer will go up or the company will go under. |

I think that some union members forget the purpose of a strike. It is to deprive the company of profit. It is not for people to be left all over the street. So if random buses not connected with ShortLine are moving people, great, because ShortLine isn't moving them for profit.Having said that, it is generally a bad idea to bring in replacement workers. They are usually pressed into service and are not of the quality of the original drivers because there is no time to train them. The passengers learn really quickly that this is the case and it will kill ridership. Not to mention that it is a PR nightmare if something happens and will likely bring in outside forces into the negotiations. According to a bus buddy of mine, arson is at least 10 years in jail. So if a ShortLine bus blows up like the Godfather, the person is going to spend lots of time away from family and friends and he'll never pass a background check again. |

"It is virtually unheard of for modern management to engage in unlawful violence and, for the most part, replacement workers are looking only to complete the jobs to which they were assigned. Virtually all unlawful violence in these types of disagreements is brought on by striking union members"Obviously you weren't around or really knew anything about the Greyhound strike in 1990. I do, and quite well. I worked for another private carrier at the time and spent MORE time on the Albany picket line than most striking union drivers. Greyhound used whatever tactics they needed to get the "replacement workers" scabs thru the picket lines, including hitting striking line walkers, myself included.I spent an evening in Albany Medical Center's ER because as the scab put it, "We were told to go thru the line or we'd get fired". So please don't sit there and say it's the Union Drivers who promote violence. I know of a striking driver killed by a SCAB who didn't stop for a picket line. The gall of Shitline to hire out SCABS is outragous. I went back and loked at the ad on Craigs List. If you want to review it, go to Craigs List, St.Louis, Missouri, and type in BUS in the top search box and you'll see that this was well planned by SHITLINE because the ads were placed, get this, MAY 2, 2008. So, do you really think striking drivers promote violence? Think again! I know, let's place ad's in National Online Forums asking to hire people to take away drivers jobs, a month in advance, the drivers won't care! Come on, really now! |

Greyhound Lines certainly wanted its buses to get into and out of its terminals, just as the law permitted it to do so. It was the striking union members who would have been defying the law to block the company from doing so, and such an illegal action is really what constitutes the promotion of unlawfulness and violence. Greyhound Lines would never instruct its employees to go hit striking union members with its coaches. Unfortunately, in their zeal to inhibit the legal flow of Greyhound Lines traffic into and out of terminals, some union members became injured or killed (this seems to be similar to situations where pedestrians have darted out expectedly from the curb and into the path of motor vehicles . . . if the driver is otherwise driving safely, it is not the drivers fault).I remember many years ago riding buses into and out of the Voyageur bus terminal in Montreal. The unionized employees of Voyageur were on strike against the company, and had a picket line at the terminal's bus entrance. Police monitored the line. As each bus would approach, the picketers would walk across the entrance, blocking the bus, for about one minute. Then the police would instruct the picketers to step aside, and the bus would enter. In this case, the union members would have made their point, would have mildly inconvenienced the company and its passengers, but the company was able to continue in business as it had a right to do so, and everyone else was civil. If the Greyhound Lines union members would act with this type of civility, then no one would have to go to the emergency room. (In the end, the union effectively won its strike since the company essentially went out of business and most of its employees were let go. Voyageur at the time was virtually the only intercity bus company in Quebec, and provided substantial service in Ontario, but today it operates only between Ottawa and Montreal plus a few other short routes out of Ottawa, and is a subsidiary of Greyhound). Shortline has the right to hire replacement workers. Merely crying out about the "gall" to engage in a business practice that is legal is insufficient to turn the act into something illegal. Threatening violence in response to a legal act is simply unacceptable in a civilized society. |

Typical Management retoric...NY & NJ are CLOSED SHOP States and we are certainly not Voyaguer or Canada, Thank God! Voyaguer had the option to settle this long before a strike came about, but, chose not to, therefore sealing their own fate. Shitline had the same option but decided to advertise LONG in advance , the hiring of SCAB! I'm sure the drivers, displaced by the closing, found work elsewhere at a better rate than they were getting. The hiring of SCABS, and thats what they are, low life SCABS, many of them PROFESSIONAL SCABS that go from job to job SCABBING for Management so Management can get the upper hand on the Rank and File. Hopefully, when we get a new President, the Congress and Senate will bring up the ANTI SCAB law, whereas forcing crooked, greedy Companies, like Shitline/Coach U SCAB A-HOLES to sit down and hash out a FAIR AND DECENT contract whereas drivers can actually earn a living on their wages.. Management can sit there and bitch and complain all they want about drivers, but, the bottom line is, we can sit there and watch 100's of buses leave a terminal without a Manager onboard, but, we have yet to see a bus leave a terminal without a driver on it. Remember exactly who is a little more important in this field. |

It's a balance. Many drivers have gone off to run their own companies. Some have been left shirtless in the process. So if you think good drivers are more important than good management, you don't understand the business. Even the best owner-operators get a lot of their work from other people because they have little time to do it themselves. Unions have a habit of crossing into another company's turf when it serves the purpose. ATU 726 likes taking work from 1181, for example, because they think they are better. Frankly, I could say that all of the S89 drivers are gypsy operators because they run illegal services. However, management makes those decisions, so why go off on the "replacement workers"?. Frankly, most union members would not extend the same courtesy to them. |

Perhaps another instance of government bureaucrats treating the private sector less favorably. When PATH has a problem, NJT will accommodate displaced PATH passengers without having them purchase additional NJT tickets.(I have found no mention on the Metro North website whether or not MNCR is honoring ShortLine tickets, or if the organization is just avoiding making a decision and leaving it to its contractor--NJT--to decide for it.) |

Short Line settles (was)Re: Shortline going on strike? |
|
Posted by TransitChuckG on Wed Jun 4 18:31:55 2008, in response to Shortline going on strike?, posted by Ken S. on Thu May 22 19:35:59 2008. Short Line will resume full bus service today after striking busdrivers, mechanics and ticket agents agreed to go back to work. Members of Local 225 of the Transport Workers of America voted 125-41 yesterday in favor of the same three-year contract they narrowly rejected May 22. The 240 union employees hit the picket lines the next day, disrupting bus service to New York City for about 3,500 commuters from Rockland and Orange counties and northern New Jersey. Ratification of the contract means approximately 1,000 Rockland commuters will only have to spend one more day using an alternative means to get to their jobs in Manhattan. Many riders have chosen to take Red and Tan buses, while others opted for the trains. Barbara Bermack was thrilled to hear she would soon return to her former routine - catching the Short Line express bus from the Exit 14 park-and-ride lot in Nanuet, which dropped her a block away from her office on Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street. "Nobody's getting seats on the bus," the Spring Valley resident said. "We're getting a lot of attitude form the people on the Red and Tan because we're normally not there. It's understandable." Short Line will resume full service at 3 a.m. tomorrow. It needs a day to get its buses "checked out and ready to roll again," said George Grieve, general manager of Coach USA's northern district. Coach USA owns Hudson Transit Lines, which runs Short Line. Grieve said a combination of factors led to the end of the strike. The union came to the realization that the company was not going to offer more money, he said. Union members received their last paycheck Thursday and faced the prospect of a long, drawn-out strike. The pressure on them further intensified when Coach USA brought in replacement drivers to begin runs in Orange County yesterday and was in the process of hiring more to drive buses serving Rockland. "I'm sure that also got them thinking about their future," Grieve said. Coach USA has offered a 12.5 percent pay increase over three years (4.5 percent this year, 4 percent in 2009 and 4 percent in 2010); a 9 percent to 11 percent increase in vacation pay depending on seniority; increased match for lower contributions in the company's 401(k) plan; and increased overtime pay, Grieve said. The union initially rejected a contract May 16. The company then added an additional sick day. Grieve said the company set a bad precedent in recent years by offering more money to other unions after they turned down contracts. That occurred in 2006 with Tappan ZEExpress bus drivers and with Short Line dispatchers earlier this year. "It was important that we send a message it's not going to be the company's ongoing position to offer more money every time a contract is not ratified," Grieve said. Union leaders did not return a call seeking comment yesterday. |
