#1575 Getting TLC At CI Yard.

Well, R-7A #1575 (the R-10 prototype) was recently photographed inside the paint shop at Coney Island Yard. You can see that car body is being prepared and will be really worked over, and one of its exterior side number plates has been removed (probably the one that had the metal ding in its lower left hand corner for years).

R-7A #1575, Coney Island Shop-Paint Shop, 3/17/2009.

Could R-10 cars #3184 and #3189 ever be possibly entering into the repainting and restoration phase in the future? Just asking, and stay tuned.

That's how I like to remember the R-10's, with the white/turquoise color scheme. Do you or anyone else recall if this paint scheme was inspired by the fact that these cars (IIRC, the only NYCT cars ever painted this way) were assigned to the (A) and the (then) Rockaway division?

To be honest, I really don't know as I was about 12 years old when they went for the color scheme. My *understanding* was that it was a bow to the TA's color scheme for the newly arrived "Worlds Fair" cars on the Flushing line and a desire to "modernize" their look. Dunno if that's true or not but that's the story I heard ...

That's interesting. I always associated that color scheme with Far Rock and the Rockaway Division, right up until the Ronan Empire came along and everything LAHT got the "Metropolitan" color scheme.

IMHO, that blue and silver scheme looked HIDEOUS on the Arnines...

I wonder how much did it cost to repaint the R10-R36s and some of the R1/9s into the Silver and Blue scheme? Was there a reason why the TA did it?

It cost PLENTY ... and unlike before, where the TA purchased HUGE lots of military surplus paint, they spent this time ... the reason was that the good Doctor Ronan, appointed by Rockefeller, wanted ALL of his lovely electric trains to ALL have that fine "Metropolitan" scheme with which his mighty M-1's appeared, right down to the garbage flats. :(

If you remember the stainless with BLUE striping on the LIRR when the meatball first took over, he wanted EVERYTHING to look just like those cars. It was HIS way of "marking his territory." That's ALL there was to it. I was working there in 1970 and 1971 which was around the time that Ronan, mighty leader of the LIRR, got word that he also owned a subway. :(

True, but someone goofed when deciding the paint scheme since the turquoise paint on the R-10's wasn't a match for the robins egg blue on the R-33/36 WF cars. It turned out a little greenish in color.

Another gaff was when the R-38's were designed. The mistake was the pin stripe and letter "T" in the TA logo was light blue but was really supposed to be a darker shade of blue, like the R-32's.

Even though the R-38s came after the R-32s there was a remote possibility that the R-38s were going to be painted LAHT instead of stainless. Somewhere, possibly either here or on SubTalk, I'm not sure where, I saw an artist's rendering of what a painted R-38 would have looked like. It had an R-36 style paint scheme but the blue was much lighter more like the color of the blue stripe that the R-38s did have. Actually, I would have liked to see either the R-36 paint scheme or the R-10 racing stripe paint scheme applied to all the painted SMEEs in the fleet.

I think by the time most of the R-10s received that paint scheme, the Rockaway Division had ceased to exist and was merged into the post Chrystie B-2 Division. Besides that, the Rockaway Division was created only for pick purposes to placate the BMT employees who were displaced by the closing of the Fulton St El. IRT crews were not originally supposed to be involved but they packed a union meeting on the creation of the new division and voted to have the TA include them along with BMT and IND crews. As a result the BMT didn't get as many jobs out of it as was originall intended since the Rockaway Div runs were allotted based on the number of crews on each respective division and since the IRT had the largest number of crews at the time IRT personnel were allotted the largest number of Rockaway runs. Thus the R-10s were never assigned to the Rockaway Division per se but remained with and were maintained and inspected by the IND Division.

Yep, 1575 is getting fixed up. It'd be nice to see the two surviving R10s getting on the road sometime. Truth be told, I wasn't a fan of the R10s, but ideally, it would be nice if a representative or two of every car class could be kept operable, and I know how much some folks on here DID love the 10s, and I repsect that.

I don't really like the 16/27/30s either, but I'd still catch them on a fan trip or B-Division TOMC.

I actually think the MTA blue stripe was sharp looking (except on Arnines). Too bad the "public" had to destroy it. As a small child in the 70s, I actually never saw a car with a clean MTA paint job. It's only in pics here and on the TOMC that I've come to like it.

But I do agree that R1-9s painted that way look ridiculous.

Since R-10 #3184 (owned by RPC) was repainted back into its original two-tone grey w/orange stripes, #3189 (owned by the Transit Museum) could easily be painted into the aqua blue/white w/"racing" stripe scheme. By the way, based upon hearing discussions and reading forum messages all these years later (which I can agree in essence), many transit buffs do say the R-10's were at their best looking when they were painted in that bright eye-awakening scheme, first introduced on the cars in 1965-66, that Steve B really champions for and loves.

Yeah, a perfect example would be found in Greller's book "New York City Subway Cars". There is a photo of an R-10 car interior, #1848 (renumbered in 1970 as #2995), with that solid green paint scheme (doors and walls) as mentioned.

When they ripped past 81st St n/b, all you saw was a blur of teal and white - and lots of thunder for good measure.:)

They had the battleship gray from the Navy as well ... but no, the Olive drab probably came from the Army. :)

The R-1-9 cars look great in the traditional Green with "Ciyt of New York" in gold. The one exception being 1575. The R-10 scheme helps tell the story of the car and its rebuilding.

As far as the Blue Stripe Scheme was concerned, it looks good when clean, but lousy when dirty or graffitied.

My favorite schemes:

R-1-9 Pullman Green
R-10-12-14 Two tone Gray w/ Orange Stripe
R-15...R-36ML Pullman Green or Redbird
R-33-36WF Worlds Fair Scheme
All Stainless Steel Cars - Blue Stripe (anything but plain stainless - the ad blocks on the R-62s look fine)

For the R-15s, I prefer their original paint scheme which was maroon with a grey belt trimmed in yellow below the window line. The original solid maroon paint scheme of the R-17s was nice also.

Exactly my recollection.

The Dark Olive Green on the C and also on the A tearing down the CPW
(always mistook these for the IRT R14s till I learned the "count the doorsets" trick).

Earliest B Division ride I remember is the R10s (and boy! they were outstanding).

They weren't that loud in the late 60s. You never had to hold your ears even when screaming along CPW on the express dash - back when it was actually a DASH and not a leisurely jog.

The graffiti epidemic hadn't hit yet when the silver-and-blue (or rather, platinum mist-and-blue) scheme began to appear. The first cars to be repainted stayed clean through most of 1971.
