My *understanding* was that it was a bow to the TA's color scheme for the newly arrived "Worlds Fair" cars on the Flushing line and a desire to "modernize" their look. Dunno if that's true or not but that's the story I heard ...

True, but someone goofed when deciding the paint scheme since the turquoise paint on the R-10's wasn't a match for the robins egg blue on the R-33/36 WF cars. It turned out a little greenish in color.

Another gaff was when the R-38's were designed. The mistake was the pin stripe and letter "T" in the TA logo was light blue but was really supposed to be a darker shade of blue, like the R-32's.
