It was actually going on full tilt by then. Just seems as though the IND got spared a few years longer than the IRT before it became insane ...

It really became apparent in the late summer of 1971. By 1972, it was endemic. BTW I have seen #1575 with graffitti on it, along with all its R-7a and R-9 mates, few of which escaped.

Oddly enough - the one car class that seemed to suffer less than others was the Jamaica Arsixes and Arsevens. There were, however, a few artistes that seemed to target only them.

I remember Taki 183, which began to mass appear in The Bronx, in 1970, as the first common tag.

I remember seeing that on the ends and storm doors of the R12s and R14s. TAN 144 was another one (with the T looking sort of like a Y) that was all over the place.

I don't remember TAN 144 tag, was it done on Bronx buildings and trains?

I hung out in The Bronx a lot in the early 70's, and the Taki tag was the beginning of what was to be a scourge of vandalism on the subways.

And the NY Times doing a story on Taki 183 helped fuel the fire starting the graffiti epidemic. Thank you "Gray Lady".

Dang, you knew him? I'm surprised thought it was a homeboy or hispanic kid. I used to have some friends who lived on the block on the 183rd St stop, directly downhill, eastwards, from the D Concourse line back then. I guess this guy lived in the area. You must've been a Bronx boy.

Thanks for the details, that confirms what I've always suspected, it was a reaction. If they only kept their mouths shut it would have probably faded away, like the "Kilroy was here" WWII tag.

I remember that story when it was first published, and that came WAY after the tagging was off and running in earnest. Besides ... most of the kids who were doing that didn't read the Times anyway. If anything, that article probably caused the Eurotrash to come in and take up where the locals left off though ...

Didn't KNOW him personally, but knew of his story from the New York Times article on him way back when along with a more recent story someone had posted a few years back on Dave's "subtalk" where they went into what became of him. IINM, he was a BMW mechanic somewhere in the Bronx ... and yeah, born and raised myself. :)

I remember being at the Bronx Zoo with the rest of my classmates on our eighth grade class trip on June 11, 1971 and watching 2 and 5 trains go by (and naturally wishing I could break away and ride one). Some still wore their original colors while others wore platinum mist and blue. For the most part they were clean. It was about then that my subway riding dropped off drastically to one or two trips per year. I didn't set foot on the subway at all in 1974 and 1975.
