From a previous message: "I think the dispute there was that the MTA would then have to put out their share and have the overnight SI local bus lines and SIR run every 30 minutes too. That would help though, because I was on the 1:30am ferry last night and every bus leaving St. George at 2am was absolutely packed front to back. And the S53 is always like that overnight too, especially during the summer."

I love it when that happens, since it is the truth to the lie that the midnight over night boats are "empty", and therefore "we - Staten Island bound folk" deserve less transit than other places.

Such situations - when for example the terminals are filled with people, there's no seats in the terminal with folks seating along the windows which were not made for seating on, or seating on the floors for an hour waiting for the boats. It is just another reminder for me that too many folks just do not understand the situation (travel to/from the island), but feel like they can say we deserve less transit.

There are times when I wish I could record such nights.

Mike

No, the ferry fare was eliminated because the cost of installing and maintaining the fare collection equipment far exceeded the amount of fares that would be collected, as under the Metrocard plan, the ferry was to be a free transfer from the bus or SIR; they determined that most riders would be getting a free ride anyway.

Metrocards CAN and DO do allow for multiple transfers; on Staten Island, you can transfer from a bus that crosses the SIR to SIR and then to a bus, or the subway at certain stations in Manhattan. There are other places in the city that also allow a second free transfer.

It does indeed; there was a bit of controversy about that when it was pointed out, but at the time, the city said they were doing them anyway. Besides, can you imagine the liability is something that used to be inspected fails and causes harm because inspection was no longer required?

Overnight ferries still run hourly, from 1:30am to 5:30am from Manhattan, except Monday mornings, when they run hourly from 11:30pm Sunday to 5:30am Monday.

If you're lucky enough to be near a bus that runs overnight. I've learned to park near Victory Blvd or Arthur Kill Rd if I expect to arrive back on SI later than 11pm, since the buses to the area I live stop running.

Post-consolidation, I'd say the 62/62A/68/68A are the entire third generation, the 44/46 are second generation. The first generation is all the R-types that came before.

The R142 marks the beginning of the fourth generation.

The point is, they're not ragged. The fleet was overhauled 20 years ago, and significant work was just done to refurbish the cars again (not as extensive as the 1990 work).

The work in 1990 was a full overhaul, done relatively poorly in-house, compared to the cars the TA sent out for rebuild.

The current work involves repair/replace of many passenger-facing items, such as floors, seats, and climate control. Some work was also done on the running gear.

Most mechanical work is done at the Clifton shops, and breakdowns are rare; accidents are rarer still, the last one being caused by human error.

If the sources here are to be believed, the 'rot' on the R44 stems from the acid washes used to remove graffiti. The SIR fleet never went through this. For that matter, I don't believe SIR even has a mechanical car washer; when I used to ride daily, cars were washed by hand on westernmost tracks at St. George.

I was actually thinking about the debate period when the idea of 24/7/365 service with ferry waits of no more than 30 minutes, was being talked about.

I did not mean to imply that that was the discussion now.

At that particular time, there were folks on the forums (and not just this one) who said and/or implied that there was "low ridership" - ie that the ferry boats were not filled stem to stern during all of the midnight hours trips - that therefore less service was appropriate. Meaning hourly service on the ferry - with only one (1) running during those midnight hours, and by implication also on Saturday and Sunday nights of 7pm and after when the terminals can be brimming with people.

The part of that idea that gets to me, is that sense that those same folk complain, moan and groan about subway service that runs once every 20 minutes. As if waiting for a train every 20 minutes was the worst possible thing in the universe, but it is okay for Staten Islanders to wait 60 minutes for crowded ferries. It is the regional unfairness - that it is really bad for "me", but okay for "you".

Again, I did not mean to imply that the was the discussion now.
Mike

I've always thought the same thing. After 5 minutes of waiting for a train some people start to complain, not even 20. But it's ok for us using the ferry to wait 60 minutes at night. And during the day the ferry is very unpredictable now, they don't run the schedule as punctual as they used to.

I am sorry was not as clear as I thought I was - I have to proof-read.

I truly despise the hourly ferries and Saturday and Sunday from about 7pm (SI) or 7:30pm (leaving Manhattan) and onward for the rest of the night.

When I worked on Saturdays in Brooklyn, plenty of nights were spent waiting in the terminal for the G-D boat, along with plenty of other folk. All the while knowing that my co-workers were well at home hours ago. In addition to the unpleasantness that the terminals can sometimes become.

Just me.
Mike

Yeah, it's hardly ideal from an operational perspective, but it is fair. When the downtown light rail connector opens in a few years (5-10), the alignment will switch so that the gold line and the blue line merge. The blue line is 22 miles. The connector will be about 2 more miles. The gold line is 20 miles and the new addition could be as long as 24 additional miles. That adds up to 22+2+20+24 = 66 miles! Seems like a little far for operators. Plus you have a really busy line connected to a line that will be quite "unbusy".
