R1 100 Questions

When exactly was 100 retired? I'm looking at photos of it on the Culver shuttle from '71. It looks repainted with the clear windows replaced opposite the motorman's cab. In '68, '69, and '70 it is dingy looking and on the West End, Coney Island, and 42nd Street. After a cleaning up throughout 1971 it looks like its in service, Although I realize it may have been involved in fan trips, the pictures on nycsubway.org usually indicate as such. These don't. Furthermore, there is a picture of her in 1974 in the Coney Island yard with a nice letter M below the number. Plus there is one of 100 in 1973 on the Broadway line signed up as QB. The picture was taken, according to the profile, Tuesday, August 7, 1973. Fan trip on a Tuesday? What gives?
Merry Christmas to all by the way.

As I understand it, #100 was withdrawn from regular service and cleaned up in 1971. I believe those Fan Trips in the early 70s were similar to the Holiday Train of today- added runs in service. In 2004, the Holiday Train ran, in service, as a W- Whitehall to Ditmars Blvd. on Friday, 10/29, to observe the 100th anniversary of the subway.

Yes, I know the 100th Anniversary was 2 days earlier- and there weren't Arnines in 1904. But that's (and IRT SMEE cars on the TS shuttle) was how they observed it in 2004

I rode R1 100 in regular rush-hour service but after it had been cleaned up, shined up, and given the M designation.

It was during summer jobs in Manhattan during college, which would place it some time between 1972 and 1975, and I was commuting from Avenue J to Rockefeller Center on the Brighton Line. There is no doubt in my mind about this date range.

I had always assumed that it had been designated for the museum but had to be reactivated in rush hour because of an equipment shortage, but I don't know that for a fact.

It also showed up on the "J" . I remember it pulling into Broad street, along with other cars that had "CITY OF NEW YORK" on the
side. It sometime in the mid to late 70's.

Not to my knowledge, I'm talking about pics showing it wearing 100. I was under the impression it was removed altogether in 1970 or earlier like '68 or '69. I didn't even know about the 100 and 190 thing.

Its disgusting how 103 got tagged up. I find it interesting that they cleaned them up and put them back out there and subjected them to graffiti but I suppose no place was safe from that crap in those days. 103 has different vents on the roof, perhaps unique altogether.

Is the M for work motor or museum? All the "M" work motors in photos on nycsubway.org were renumbered into the 500 series.

Trying to figure that one out myself. With the LoV's that were the redominant work motors back in my time, they all had "WM" under the number plate. And as you note with the 500 series though, they had "M" underneath to designate work motors. But like the 500's you saw, that was the same "M" designation on the 100's which is consistent with the 100's which is why I'm assuming that. Never knew of an "M" designation for the museum - they usually just got buried somewhere where the wigs couldn't see them. Like out on Dyre and such. :)

I think that you've made your point. In the official records, though, a museum car was designated with the car number preceded by the letter "A" thus car #103 became A0103 in the computer.

The Transit Muesem openned in 1976, for how long prior to that time was it planned. Saving a car from 1969-70 for a muesem that would not exist for 6 more years (and only a temporary one) would be strange.

Indeed it would. I bailed out of the city before then myself. I still think that "M" was a work motor designation. RPC and other cars intended for ale to museums or owned by such entities sat out in CIY on their own track and I couldn't see those being turned to revenue since MTA no longer officially owned them anymore.

Well these weren't the first cars ever saved were they? Im saying that I think its strange they would clean up those cars and then run them back out onto the road to take abuse like graffiti. Was 103 at Court St. in 1976? I know 100 was for sure. Point is that both of these cars, R1s, were restored somewhat and put back on the road apparently. Why?

Nevertheless, even some Q cars on the Myrtle that were planned for saving had the word 'museum" paintd on them, I guess to remind CIY crews not to cut them up.

Clearly, some folks int he TA were thinking about preservation, even several years before they were able to open up the Transit Exhibit in 1976. Some ideas (not just in transit, but in lefe) are long in formation, and if you work at them a little at a time, they eventually happen. As TA veteransd on here have pointed out, crews made a concious effort to save cars at least in the early 1960s...once they had enough, they convinced management to have a "temporary exhibit"...which they extended into permanence.

Since the non museum R-9s ran in passenger service until 1976, I doubt that it would have taken a specially qualified crew to operate that museum train since all crews at that time would still have been qualified on anything that ran.

Well, I get the sense that TA front-line employees, and at least first line supervision, if not management, takes pride in the subway's history. The early 70s cleanup of these cars seems to me to have been 1) Meant to inspire a sense of history in the public as well 2) Be the first steps towards creating a museum- get some cleaned up- then make the case to the suits and the politicians, etc...

As Bill says, in those days, with all the problems they had, it may have been difficult to keep them off the orad- espcially since the car class was still in service. And letting the public see them in gleaming condition may have been an attempt at subliminal messages to not vandalize the system...

Of course, I was in what they called "nursery school" (a/k/a "pre K"), so I don't have any actual memories or inser knowledge. But it's my take on the situation.

Not only did the old timers run on 10/29/04, they also ran in revenue service on 10/27 and 10/28. A few of us were coming up the BMT Broadway line from City Hall, where we'd stepped on the platform of the loop station, and when we got to Times Square (hoping to catch the Lo-Vs), lo and behold there they were on the s/b express track!. I yelled out, "The R units are running!", at which point we made a beeline up the stairs, down to the s/b platform and scrambled aboard. The old timers were running express between Canal St. and 57th St., and their gears hit F# above middle C between 34th and Union Square.

For the record, they ran local between Astoria and Canal St. on the 28th and 29th. I stayed on them for as long as I could on the 29th, finally bailing at 57th because I had to catch a plane home. Talk about cutting it close - by the time I got through security at LGA, my flight was boarding.
