Well, I get the sense that TA front-line employees, and at least first line supervision, if not management, takes pride in the subway's history. The early 70s cleanup of these cars seems to me to have been 1) Meant to inspire a sense of history in the public as well 2) Be the first steps towards creating a museum- get some cleaned up- then make the case to the suits and the politicians, etc...As Bill says, in those days, with all the problems they had, it may have been difficult to keep them off the orad- espcially since the car class was still in service. And letting the public see them in gleaming condition may have been an attempt at subliminal messages to not vandalize the system... Of course, I was in what they called "nursery school" (a/k/a "pre K"), so I don't have any actual memories or inser knowledge. But it's my take on the situation. |
