Nevertheless, even some Q cars on the Myrtle that were planned for saving had the word 'museum" paintd on them, I guess to remind CIY crews not to cut them up.

Clearly, some folks int he TA were thinking about preservation, even several years before they were able to open up the Transit Exhibit in 1976. Some ideas (not just in transit, but in lefe) are long in formation, and if you work at them a little at a time, they eventually happen. As TA veteransd on here have pointed out, crews made a concious effort to save cars at least in the early 1960s...once they had enough, they convinced management to have a "temporary exhibit"...which they extended into permanence.
