I remember!!! I have a slightly different brochure- I got it from the Daily News the Sunday prior, and is 8 1/2 x 11 size, with a tinited photo od the mezzanine level of the Parsons/Archer Station.

Inside is identical, excpet for the folding.

My initial surpsie when I went out a few weeks later to lok was that the new line tunnel under the Van Wyck Expressway. I has assumed it stayed on the El past 121 St just to the point of Sutphin Blvd...

I got a look at the then abandoned, cut off El section between 126th St (approx) and Sutphin Blvd.

I actually knew from an early age where the el would end. The ramp down to the tunnel adjacent to the LIRR was built around 1982 and sorta hung out there in oblivion until the connection began being built in the summer of 1985.

When my mom worked at Mary Immaculate hospital I went to see her sometimes on Jamaica ave and saw the ramp and for years wondered what it was about until I saw the new paint (goldish) ended right around 121st and I was like UH OHHH lol. I like how they said "NEW" service to south eastern Queens, if they left the EL and extended it there would have always been service, and moving the train 1 block south doesn't mean south eastern Queens got anything new. Personally I think the TA wasted $ on that extension because they didn't do the full route.

The Acela Express made its inaugural revenue trip on December 11, 2000: a round trip from Washington to Boston. The original schedule had one round trip a day, northbound from Washington at 5 AM and southbound from Boston at about 5 PM.

(This post comes from a Northeast Regional train, the Acela is a bit more expensive today than it was 12 years ago, I saw tickets for trains this morning from WAS to NYP being sold for over 200 dollars.)

I did the same thing. That switch from gold to green always baffled me as a kid. I used it as the marker between Jamaica and Richmond Hill (even though the real border was a few blocks east). When they began connecting the new subway in 1985 I finally figured out that they just didn't bother painting the outer portion gold in the 70's due to it's future demolition.

I did a AE round trip New Year's weekend in 2006.

Round trip was a shade over $600...first class.

The trip northbound got stalled outside of Metropark (equipment wouldn't start again) and we waited for 2 hours for another AE to take our passenger load to Penn NY.

Haven't taken the AE since then. The bump up to first class wasn't worth it on that kind of service, IMHO.

The brochure cover showing a D train reinforces my happiness with the return of the four route names: Brighton, Culver, Sea Beach and West End. For a while, I believe, these names were missing from the trains and the platforms. Someone living in Midwood might recall that his line was the D, but now discover that it brings him to Bensonhurst. Wasn't Culver D when the Independent took over the McDonald El? At least the four route names will stay in place, even if a T, TT, TB or QB gets mixed in. (Okay, there wasn't a TB, but TT means Toilet Tissue.)

According to one of the old signs that hovered above the tracks on the platform at Union Turnpike station (obviously, they are gone now, this was about 26-27 years ago), the E and F were to continue to 179th Street, and the G and N were to go to Jamaica Center. There was to be a G late night shuttle train from Van Wyck Blvd to Jamaica Center. This is what the sign actually said at the Van Wyck Blvd station underneath the black sticker covering with the effect of "To Archer Ave". Whether they actually had plans to implement this scheme, I do not know. The sign at Union Tpke read G and N, NOT the R, as this plan was well before the R ran to Continental Ave in May of '87. The Archer Avenue Subway was already done by this point (Construction ended in late 1983/early '84).

They were restored in 1979 with the Diamond Jubilee on the BMT only. The Culver name wasn't restored to the F line until 1987.

Yes, I remember them well. They were installed at Union Tpke and some of them had their black covering removed. I had no idea what these signs meant until Archer Ave opened.

I'm glad they changed the pattern, running the locals out to Archer would have seriously pissed off all the re-routed bus passengers.

Thanks for the information. So the structural work was done by early 1984. I'm surprised it took that long to complete it. I remember that crossover east of 121 St opening in Nov. 1987, as you mentioned. Before that there was single tracking from just east of 111 St station to 121 St via the Manhattan bound track using a switch to the middle storage track and a temporary realignment from the middle track to the Manhattan bound track, starting May 1985 when they chopped out a 2 block el section at 130 St.

That covered-up signage was also at 75th Av, 67th Av, and 63rd Dr. It went up in 1984-5, before the N/R switch.

I remember it being used earlier than that, though your general dating is correct. Trains were being stored on the ramp by this time and they opened both platforms at 121st St.

The ramp itself was built to a point just short of Jamaica Ave as early as 1982. Construction of the connector began in April 1985, right after service was cut back from Queens Blvd.





The el structure was demolished for another block west to a point where the existing structure was level with the new ramp. This was completed by the end of 1986.

The Archer Ave line was originally scheduled to open in 1983, then 1984. I seem to remember reading in the newspaper shortly afterwards that the federal government forced the MTA to open it in 1988 because they were dragging their feet.

A particular politicain from Long Island whined so much about the lines construction..had construction stopped..then delayed..
The MTA gradually lost interest in the line..wanted to abandon it and the 63rd st tunnel completly..but was forced by the FEDS to either complete the routes..OPERATE them..or return EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR and CENT used to build them.

Well..you know the MTA wasnt going to give back anything..so they reluctantly choose to open the Archer first..even though the route would not serve the targeted areas[South Jamaica/Queens Village] the lines were built for.

Even though I deplore the replacement of the el in Jamaica, if I had to have this done I would have kept the el fully open longer, and put priority on getting the upper (IND) level of Archer Ave ready faster and before the lower. In this way, the upper level could have been opened concurrent with the closing of the el, this minimizing the effect on Jamaica. Only then would the BMT connection be built. No 11 year gap with no service east of Queens Blvd. There was no need to wait until it was fully complete before starting service.

This tells you there were plans to open at least the upper level earlier, which should have been done, to ease the loss of the el in Jamaica. Even if it was just served by the Queens Blvd locals ...

I switched my commute when this branch opened as it was faster to take the J or Z and switching to the A at ENY/Broadway Junction to get to downtown Brooklyn instead of taking the E train and switching to the F. Prior to openning, I took the bus to 169th St., grabbed the E and switched to the F to get to the downtown Brooklyn.

Before they re-signalled the J line the skip-stop run to Fulton St was faster than the E train to WTC by a good 6 minutes or so. Now the difference is less than 2 minutes, with half the time being lost between Alabama Ave and Chauncey St.

The station. It was obviously not new when I first went through it. Water puddles were already present that opening day. As for Parsons/Archer, the station itself was ever darker than the present, if that's possible. More lighting was installed in the 90's. The lower level here was darker than an incandescent-lit station.

Particularly the sole intact gated one at Metropolitan Ave. The other stairs were removed shortly after service ended. This particular stairway was not locked properly. The mezzanine was trashed. Initially we went up to the platform just to look around, but we then started daring each other to do more and more, until we were walking down the catwalk to Queens Blvd. I was scared shitless crossing over the Van Wyck. Thankfully it was nighttime.

One was left at Metro, probably for employee access.

One odd thing that I noticed was that, even though the station lighting was completely dead, the signals were lit and all set to red.
