I don't see any reason why compatible operating systems fro railcars can't be installed the way the GE, WH and WABCO propulsion and braking systems were installed in pre NTT equipment. I remember seeing the specs for the GOHing of the R-46s which specified that the Master controller in the operating cabs were to be WABCO Cineston or an equivalent. Even though initially, it might seem to be a little more costly to specify total compatibility, the purchase and stockpiling of compatible equipment in large bulk orders rather than smaller orders of different equipments would probably save more money in the long run. Having one basic type of car for the entire system would probably be more economical for the long haul.
