Erskine St (Exit 15) now exists between Penn Ave and Cross Bay on the Belt. Right now between Exits 11 and just west of 15, there is a 35 MPH restriction due to ongoing construction that nobody seems to follow. There are solid lines preventing lane changes, however. And a ticket means automatic points with a suspension on the second violation. Doesn't matter -- I've seen 65+ at least.

Parts of the Clearview are also a big temptation.

My dad actually hit 120 mph on the Clearview once, but that was after 9/11 when every cop was busy doing real tasks and dealing with a real emergency...

The speed limit is only 45, so 55 is not that unrealistic, unless you mean the series of about 5 curves by the cemetery. Now there you are advised 25 -- from what I see the slowest tend to do 35, the faster ones 40. On the straighter parts, I can see how one easily reaches 65, and even more at night. But if you mean 65 on the curves, that's where my imagination fails me.

Be warned, however -- plenty of danger at that curve under Queens Blvd that creeps up on people when the lanes are narrow. From the east there are flashing yellow lights surrounding a 25 MPH warning sign. The main danger is that the curve is trickier than it looks and you have no room for error -- you have to turn the wheel at an exact moment.

My desired numbers on highways in general are 60 and 45 (speed limit and minimum speed). As it is now, I always drive the speed limit, but almost always use the right lane unless passing an even slower car. I don't want too high a speed limit, first because it wastes gas (60 MPH is where, for most cars, you start to spend more gas than necessary to cover the same distance, even without stopping -- and I sure see that when looking at my RPM meter), but also because then if someone thinks conditions dangerous (such as the very beginning of rain, a danger that most drivers underestimate) enough to slow to the 40s they should not be sticking out that badly, if they have to stick out at all.

I see your point about moron drivers doing the speed limit in the left lane, I've been trapped by them too but I'm sure your're aware that there are not seperate speed limits for left & right lanes.

The only way you can possibly control that is to enforce the keep right except to pass rule. You see that a lot In Pennsylvania, signs & enforcement that is, but rarely enforced in the NYC metro area.

And you probably have nothing to worry about because the police came up behind me in the right lane and followed me there for two miles (west from Exit 13 to 11) with me at exactly 35 MPH as if trying to find a reason to ticket me. I held my ground and made absolutely sure I didn't even hit 36. Finally at Exit 11 they zoomed by in the center lane, got off in front of me (I too was getting off), U-turned, and went back to the Belt, presumably east trying to get someone else. It was near the end of the month, just for the record.

My point: they're after the ones going 40 in the right lane and not the ones going 70 in the left.

I agree. Last week I drove out to Montauk, and I noticed there is absolutely no reason why the LIE cannot have a 65 mph speed limit. At the very least, in Suffolk County. The road is straight as an arrow, the lanes are wide, and the exits are spaced apart at reasonable distances. Ironically, in New Jersey I sometimes feel that the speed limit is too high (65) on I-287 through Edison and Piscataway, where it is very congested and not as "safe feeling" as the current LIE.

I like those cars form about '63 on.

My brother had a 1963 Dodge Polara, white with red trim and interior. It was the very first car I learned to drive on when I got my learners permit.

My dad taught me and my brother to drive by taking us to Brooklyn Terminal Market on a Sunday. It was deserted and since there was no traffic, it was great for learning to drive. The Polara with pushbutton transmission was very powerful. Too much foot on the pedal and it took off like a rocket. I wasn't used to it. heh

My brother eventually drove the car cross country to California, even raced it on a race track, though it was purely stock. The car strayed out west for some reason and never returned to Brooklyn. Sadly no photos exist of the machine.

I was once going 75 mph in the right lane in the middle of nowhere and was passed by an 18-wheel semi going about 85 mph

Awesome! Thats my kinda truck driver! It would have been awesome if dude was listening to this song while he was hauling ass with his Rig!

I respectfully disagree. The JRP has benefitted from quite a few upgrades in the last 25 years or so. The Belt is the same over that time besides the wooden lamposts and the viaduct over the yard what else has been done? The Ocean Parkway interchange is a modern improvement but neither of these roads are truly capable of 1960's traffic let alone today's.

The limits of the roadway design? The poor condition of the road surface? Also, the road has a higher potential capacity with everyone doing 50mph than 55 mph.

I'm glad to see that you keep right when only driving the speed limit so the rest of us can pass you out.

Unless you are passing, you should keep left. It is very simple. But there are MANY morons out there who just don't get it.
