This is another can't-win situation for Obama. If the talks fail, and Obama doesn't help Israel in the event of war, he will be said to have abandoned our "only real ally" in the Middle East. On the other hand, if Obama does send in the troops, aircraft carriers, and planes, the GOP will accuse him of being a "warmongering interventionist", sending our military into another foreign war.

No matter what happens if the talks fall through, Obama will get the blame. If Romney were in the White House, nobody would say he was "threatening" Israel by stating a noninterventionist policy. Obama, meanwhile, is walking a fine line, and he's telling Netanyahu that the Israelis aren't helping themselves by taking a hard stance with Abbas.

I seem to recall that when President Carter brokered peace between Begin and Sadat, it ended in Sadat's assassination, and the beginning of Egypt's downspiral into the mess it eventually became. I think Obama is simply stating that it is time for the interested parties to find peace on their own. I understand how incredibly charged this issue is, on both sides, but handling it is part of statecraft, which is the responsibility of Netanyahu and Abbas to work out.

The question is, can they do it?
