They changed to letters in the late 40s, IINM. IND routes were always lettered. Numbers started to appear on IRT routes in the 50s. All this was WAAAAY before the MTA appeared in 1968. |

I spent a lot of time riding Eastern Division trains as a child. I loved the second photo because most of the Broadway-Brooklyn Local service was provided by Standards. Only once in a while did I see a #14 line R-16. Don't know what the schedule for the skip-stops is now, but the first #15 afternoon rush hour express began at 3:30PM at Broad Street. The Myrtle Ave Express (with Multis or Standards) began at 4PM out of Chambers Street. It's great to relive those days! |

BMT number markings were officially dropped when the Chrystie St. connection opened. Letter markings were phased in beginning with the R-27s in 1960 and then on the Southern Division. Since the R-16s ran almost exclusively on the Three Stooges Division, you still saw number markings until 1967. I still remember wondering, "What's a 15?" when I rode on one such train for the first time on September 23 of that year. |

Back around 1962 or so, there was a newspaper article entitled " Progress In Reverse" it was taken at 168th Street [?] in a blizzard with 2 AB Standards, talking about how the unreliable R16's with sticking doors and frozen interiors were transferred to the mostly underground 14th Street Canarsie Line. I would be interesting to see that article / photo again. |

I too wondered what was a #15. I remember the first time I saw them. When I was a kid, me & my parents were on the Q53 Triboro bus from Woodside to Rockaway. We'd be stopped at a red light at Jamaica Ave & Woodhaven Blvd and see a set pulling out of that sta signed # 15, wondering what happened to the #'s 8 thru 14?!.BTW, were delevered with sealed beams?? |

The BMT kept route numbers until the Chrystie merger of 1967 although the R-27s through 38s were delivered with letters which were used starting in 1960. The BMT letters for the Southern Division became semi official circa 1966 when signs were posted in BMT stations advising passengers to "know trains at a glance" and listing the new route letters. The change from route numbers to letters an a semi official policy seemed to coincide with the removal of the D types, which were the last cars on the Southern Division to use route numbers, from passenger service. |

(What Stooge was the #14?) I disliked them early on (before age 11) because I was too short to see out of the porthole storm window, but grew fond of them as time went by. The 16s were in bad shape by the early 70s when they mostly appeared on the EE and GG. It seems like they were retired by 1977 after a brief stint on the J. Then they magically reappeared in 1982 on the J and L. This is taking into account my having been away at college from September 1978 thru December 1981, including summers of '80 and '81. But it was well documented that their resurrection was because of the cracks in the 44/46 undercarriages. The last time I remember riding one was on the L from 8th Avenue to 1st Avenue on the day the Mets won their second World Series. |

During the summer of 1969 when I worked the Culver shuttle for a week, I had one of those few R-16s equipped with Southern Div signs. I can tell you that the R-10's did have at least a full amount of route and destination readings for the BMT Division for the *side* boxes. Many, many years ago at a Transit Museum auction/garage sale, I purchased from there two R-10 BMT Division side route roll signs at $50 each. Upon inspecting each of the rolls, I had noticed some dirt wear & tear around the "B'way-Jamaica Exp." and "B'way-Jamaica Lcl." area. The R-10's purchased and delivered as new in the late-1940's were capable of running on either the IND or BMT. One poster on this forum said he had seen a photo of newly delivered car #3000 that sported each a BMT Division front route and destination sign. As for the R-16's, I recall seeing front and side roll signs for the BMT at first for the Eastern Division only, but then with later attachment for the Southern Division's Brighton and 4th Avenue lines. -William A. Yeah, during their brief time in 1980-81, I rode the R-10's twenty times on the "E" and just six times on the "F". Also, I managed to get one complete Manhattan-bound ride with the R-10's on the "LL" back in February 1981, with car #3161 as the lead motor.-William A. Padron ["Hudson Terminal"] |
