The BMT kept route numbers until the Chrystie merger of 1967 although the R-27s through 38s were delivered with letters which were used starting in 1960. The BMT letters for the Southern Division became semi official circa 1966 when signs were posted in BMT stations advising passengers to "know trains at a glance" and listing the new route letters. The change from route numbers to letters an a semi official policy seemed to coincide with the removal of the D types, which were the last cars on the Southern Division to use route numbers, from passenger service.
