BMT number markings were officially dropped when the Chrystie St. connection opened. Letter markings were phased in beginning with the R-27s in 1960 and then on the Southern Division. Since the R-16s ran almost exclusively on the Three Stooges Division, you still saw number markings until 1967. I still remember wondering, "What's a 15?" when I rode on one such train for the first time on September 23 of that year. |
