And, of course, the lead R-16 car [#6387], which is on that layup track between Crescent Street and Cypress Hills in photo #7, survives today and is on display at the NY Transit Museum. The car does have most of its post-Chrystie Street side rollsign readings intact there.

Yeah, particular on this one memorable ride I took of them on the "E" going to Jamaica. It was probably a sight to have a steady race between a ten-car R-10 "E" train (each with 100 MPH per motor) versus an eight-car R-46 "N" train (each with 115 MPH per motor) approaching 63rd Drive.

Well, as long as the R10 didn't have too many dead motors, which there were many in the 70's and 80's!

Although the end signs on the R-10s, 11s and 16s were interchangeable, the side signs were not. The destination signs on the R-10s and 11s were interchangeable but the route signs although they could physically fit, had slightly different readings. The R-10s had both the route and train classification on one sign like "Wash Hts 8th Ave Exp" while the r 11s split the route and classification into 2 signs like "Wash Hts 8 Avenue" on one sign and "Express" on the other.

For a while the R10 and R16 rivaled each other for biggest piece of crap in the fleet. At least some R10's got a mini overhaul. When the R16's began disappearing in the winter of 86/87, I assumed they were coming back painted green or red, after getting overhauled. By summertime, I knew they were gone for good.

Since some GOs can start as early as 900AM, it could be possible that the last couple of returning short lines would have to be rerouted to the express along with the Myrtle Chambers and Jamaica service.

Wayne rode on an 179th St.-bound R-10 Fred in early 1981 that in his words, smoked, especially on the Hillside Ave. portion. It took the broad curve between Van Wyck Blvd. and Sutphin Blvd. at a fast clip and rocketed past Sutphin Blvd.

And to think that back in the late 60s, the R-10s weren't bad at all.
