The 16s were in bad shape by the early 70s when they mostly appeared on the EE and GG. It seems like they were retired by 1977 after a brief stint on the J. Then they magically reappeared in 1982 on the J and L. This is taking into account my having been away at college from September 1978 thru December 1981, including summers of '80 and '81. But it was well documented that their resurrection was because of the cracks in the 44/46 undercarriages.The last time I remember riding one was on the L from 8th Avenue to 1st Avenue on the day the Mets won their second World Series. |
