Tower 18 R.I.P. (Photos) |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Mon Oct 26 00:29:53 2009 Looking west we find a Pink line train entering the Loop seconds after a Green line train left. For the weekend closedown, Green and Pink line trains will turn, using the Wells Street side of the Loop. Orange and Brown line trains will link up, turning at Lake and Wells to use the Lake Street side of the Loop. These two photos are looking north.... this would be the scene from the front of a northbound Green or a westbound Pink line train during the reroute. We'll turn to the left, from Wells to Lake Streets. Now we're looking south. This would be from a southbound linked Orange/Brown train. We'll turn to the left onto Lake Street during the reroute. The reroutes will mean no switch throwing by hand at all. There will be no straight moves across any other routes either. Flagmen will be posted due to the limited visibility around curves. This coming weekend, Tower 18 in Chicago at Lake and Wells is scheduled to be no more. Over the weekend, the controls will be moved to a temporary location at the head of a new bungalow constructed at track level between Lake ST and Randolph. A clever scheme that maintains weekend service for the Pink, Green, Orange and Brown lines should be approved this week. David Harrison |

Chicago speed limit questions |

I notice the speed limit signs are quite different from ours in NYC.Are there signals on timers to enforce them, like here? If so, do the signals clear at or near the posted limits, or are the limit signs just fantasies (like here), and the trains actually must go much slower than the posted signs for the signals to clear? |

|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Mon Oct 26 10:27:08 2009, in response to Chicago speed limit questions, posted by gbs on Mon Oct 26 02:51:58 2009. There are two kinds of speed limit signs, black on yellow and black on white...all MPH, no stupid metrics. Simply stated, the white signs give speed limits that don't conform to the cab signal limit, like a 20 MPH curve in 25 MPH cab signal. All CTA "L" trains operate with cab signals that display the permitted speed limit and the actual trains speed. A beeping sound is heard whenever the speed limit changes and the operator has about 2.5 seconds to go to brake #2. If a brake position is not made within that time, a penalty stop is enforced. The cab signal has set limits at 70, 55, 35, 25, 15, and stop. Signal maintainers set the speeds trackside. A 55 MPH could be turned down to, say 35 MPH, due to track conditions. The maximum speeds are typically 55 MPH although there are stretches on the median lines where a 70 MPH is given. Trains currently have a top speed of 58 MPH when "overspeed" would kick in, cutting off power and coasting until the train slowed to 52 MPH. All Chicago "L" trains have a 70 MPH capability. Unless you were included in a testing situation, that would mean that the train overspeed malfunctioned, not to mention the cab signals. Of course the train could have been on bypass overriding the cab signals. Perhaps the motorman was lying or the speedometer was defect.David Harrison |

Three routes can go through at the same time...Orange around the corner, Brown around the other corner, and a second Brown straight onto the Loop. There are quite a number of two train combinations, including any two straight moves....inbound and outbound Green or inbound Brown and outbound Purple. The beauty of the reroute is that no switches need be thrown, no home signals are needed, nothing crosses the path of any other route. "Throughput"...now that's an interesting term.Does it mean in layman's language, "Worlds Busiest Railroad Junction" which was the popular description of Tower 18 up until 1943 when the city' first subway opened, relieving the Loop "L" of the Jackson Park-Howard-Evanston and the Englewood/Normal Park- Ravenswood routes. I am so glad I got to ride CTA in 2005 & 06 before they took the tower down. It is the best interlocking plant of all the heavy-rail transit systems in the country. Thanks for sharing these great shots. I am disapointed there are no real good pictures on the net of the Met Line split at Marshfield JCT also the Met line connection with the loop. I have seen some good ones where the met line crossed the lake st line. I took the pink line in 06 and the curve from the Paulina connector to lake st line is tight and a bit scary. I guess that was the connection that was built in the 50's during the Congress Expressway construction. |

The work on the train and the participants are supposedly voluntary. Plus, you are forgetting all the good the train does. And in these hard times, the real costs of the train hardly would keep any laid off employees at work.
