It's German.There's no "r" sound in it, but the "oe" is pronounced like there's an r coming, almost like a New Englander saying "Gurta." This calls to mind a cartoon that appeared in Chicago Magazine maybe 30 years ago. The drawing shows a cabbie talking to his obviously upscale passenger couple: "For the last time, I'm tellin' ya there _ain't_ no Gerta Street!" The automated announcements on the buses say "Gerta." My wife insists that the "correct Chicago pronunciation" (i.e., the way everyone is supposed to mispronounce it) is "Gothee" (and similarly, "Byuenna Park"). |
