There are two kinds of speed limit signs, black on yellow and black on white...all MPH, no stupid metrics. Simply stated, the white signs give speed limits that don't conform to the cab signal limit, like a 20 MPH curve in 25 MPH cab signal.

All CTA "L" trains operate with cab signals that display the permitted speed limit and the actual trains speed. A beeping sound is heard whenever the speed limit changes and the operator has about 2.5 seconds to go to brake #2. If a brake position is not made within that time, a penalty stop is enforced. The cab signal has set limits at 70, 55, 35, 25, 15, and stop. Signal maintainers set the speeds trackside. A 55 MPH could be turned down to, say 35 MPH, due to track conditions. The maximum speeds are typically 55 MPH although there are stretches on the median lines where a 70 MPH is given. Trains currently have a top speed of 58 MPH when "overspeed" would kick in, cutting off power and coasting until the train slowed to 52 MPH. All Chicago "L" trains have a 70 MPH capability.
