I'm glad we don't have very many roundabouts traffic circles in this country. I'd get distracted from the road trying to read all the destinations on that sign.I agree on that one. England would be so much nicer with all the roundabouts ripped out and replaced by four-way stops, traffic lights, SPUIs, diamond interchanges, cloverleaves, and stacks as appropriate. |

"Something along the lines of the FTC has been in the works for a long time"Because MTA has been hearing from a long time about how crappy the current station complex is. Hearing that from customers, patrons, voters. "Most people however do not follow up on the details of the project as we do here on SubChat" Everyone had multiple opportunities to participate in meetings about the project, talk to their legislators, call MTA etc. "Most NYers will never even know that the MTA even planned to build a Glass Egg." False and ridiculous. The Egg was all over the newspapers; it was discussed on NY1 and in public hearings. Most NYCrs knew all about it; many liked it; few complained about it. Many didn't feel strongly one way or the other because the federal government was picking up the whole tab. People responded positively to the design and it was only later, when the price tag shot up that concerns were voiced. At $750 million This project had the consensus of the city behind it. 9/11 helped inasfar as the tab was picked up, but no, attentiuon to the Memorial did not interfere with it. At $800 million, people raised concerns but largely still supported it. At $900 million it became untenable. |

Most other people go straight to the Sports Section, political stuff or celebrity gossip and either forget about it or ignore it altogether let alone get into the details. If you show me in passing a nice pretty Glass Egg and say that this will solve Fulton's problems, I would say "Hey that's great, I support it, especially if the Feds are paying for it" and then go back to reading about Michael Vick or Anna Nicole Smith. They're nice, but there's a fair share of drivers here who balk at the idea of entering a rotary roundabout rond-points traffic circle and proceed to lose all knowledge they previously learned about proper signaling and yielding the right of way. Then the other half take the opportunity to take a racing line and drive at anti-urban speeds. And then there's the issue of creating massive severance... The same often goes for four-way stops, although those are even simpler. At least with four-way stops, speeds are kept down, and drivers are forced to have a certain amount of courtesy. |

A bit late, but those are very good pics showing the area.As noted, what probably should be done there is to build a 40-60 story residential building on the site above the new FTC entrance at Fulton and Broadway. There can also be a retail (4-5 floors perhaps) complex built in below the apartment building as well. |

"and infinitely preferable to monstrosities like this."The worst of both worlds! There is actually one thing worse: the sort of interchange where the roads are just as big and busy, but they didn't build the flyover for one of the roads. This funnels even more immense amounts of traffic onto the roundabout, and invariably results in a major road being interrupted by a roundabout with traffic lights on it. Two particularly nasty examples are M42 J3 and M42 J4 (both just south of Birmingham, on the bit of beltway that actually got built). J3 in particular would be really great as a cloverleaf. |
