Actually...no, just about 100% of Long Island's freight goes right through there.Here's a photo of the place from back in the local service days, when you could still walk on the platform, as it was an active (although rarely used) station.... Here it is around 1990, this is before any of the stations had signs. They only put signs up at all of them around 1993 or so, after an absense of many many years of none of them having a sign: Here is a view from the street. That's GP38-2 #260: Here it is around 1998, just before closing: Excuse the quality, as back then I only took slides, and they sometimes loose something in the scanning. |

I have simpler ideas for the line. Restore high level platforms in Glendale, Fresh Pond and somewhere in Maspeth (Maspeth Ave is a logical choice) and simply run all existing diesel service headed for LIC up and down the line. This would give these neighborhoods SOME sort of rail service they could use to access the #7 line in LIC. If you want to spend some more money, connecting this line to the East River tubes would be an even better way to bring rail service to these neighborhoods. |

If you stand at that corner every weekday at 8:15 AM and 5:22 PM, you'll see actual in-service passanger trains come crawling through.Back in April I was filming a scene for a film-class thing under the line and it was a surprise to me when I saw an in-service train come through I guess around 5:22pm.....as we were recording. That was after somebody told me no trains went through. The passing train drowned out some of the audio dialogue, so we had to do it over. |

The interesting question is why this particular station got a modern, concrete high level platform to begin with. Stations on the Rockaway Beach line like Parkside and Brooklyn Manor got wooden platforms, and they probably had lots more patronage. The Richmond Hill station as it exists today had to have been built after the Jamaica Ave. el was erected, so any pre-subway ridership most likely was gone by then. |

Ironically, Glendale used to be electrified. Third Rail electrification extended from the Rockway Branch, onto the Montauk Branch, and to Fresh Pond. I don't know what the purpose of that was, but Glendale was definitely electrified....but of course, it didn't come via Richmond Hill, but Via the Rockaway Branch where they met.Here's a photo I found of Glendale Station in 1938. There was another station with high platforms that was even closer to Jamaica than Richmond Hill, and that was Union Hall Street. That was only a few blocks from Jamaica. I remember stopping there on the Hempstead Line. If it didn't close it could have became a more useful station with the completion of Archer Avenue. |
