I'm usually all for more convenient and direct options, but all I can imagine at the moment are these Amtrak trains getting in the way of LIRR operations. |

When I moved to NYC in 1966, Penn Station had many notices of discontinuace of joint PRR-LIRR fares--single, RT and monthly passes. A commuter could buy a pass frompoints on PRR as far as stations on Philly area commuter lines to Garden City and other points on LIRR. |

IINM this is part of Amtrak's service downgrdes projected for supposed capacity constraints during maintenance windows of East River Tunnels. At present this is represented by the abolition of one of the two Florida trains from NYC. |

According to the News12 article, it will be three trains per day. Dual-mode engines and stops in Jamaica and Hicksville. The Suffolk County Executive says service will start in 2027. The Amtrak spokesperson say "as early as 2028" but that infrastructure improvements such as an additional track and platform at Ronkonkoma will be needed. The whole thing seems like fantasy stuff. Why they would need an additional track or platform for three trains per day makes no sense. The complete redundancy with existing LIRR service also makes no sense. Neither Hicksville nor Ronkonkoma is a real "destination" for anyone on the Northeast Corridor. The use of dual-mode engines sounds more like it would be an extension of Empire Service from Albany and upstate -- but the quotes in the article mention Washington and Baltimore as destinations. Put me down for "not surprised" if there aren't any Amtrak trains at Ronkonkoma in 2029... |

Amtrak has a lot of need for modern cars and that will create manufacturing demand for capacity that can be reallocated to national defense if needed. In light of the current situation, I suspect that Amtrak could do very well. |

I certainly won't say that this can't happen, but the real question is what problem does it solve? Before a scheme such as that, what would actually solve a problem would be a rail link from the Ronkonkoma train station to MacArthur Airport. Other than that, is anyone on Long Island not using Amtrak because of the change at Penn Station New York? That alone wouldn't stop me. For a long-distance traveller, the layover at Penn Station probably wouldn't be a deal-killer.People are floating all manner of ideas these days-- it doesn't mean that they are even close to fruition. I'll believe this when I see funding for actual work (not studies) included in someone's capital budget. Quite a number of seemingly trivial but necessary details would need to be resolved, starting with voltage, shoes, qualifying crews and equipment, work rules, and so on. Can it be done? Sure-- but my question is still, "why?" |

IIRC the PRR had a few thru trains to Montauk about 100 years ago. Today, in the summertime it just wouldn't work. Not enough track capacity with all those existing LIRR summer extras. AFAIK its single track from Speonk to Montauk with scattered passing sidings. Just not enough track. |

How many Amtraks would you think would run to Montauk if they ever instituted the service? LIRR runs just nine (eastbound; six WB) on weekdays and five each way on weekends. One or two Amtraks could probably theoretically fit, but where's the demand? |

Amtrak has figured this out and have crafted a plan that should do fine in the second Trump administration. The only constraint is whether the railcar manufacturers can keep up with demand. Even if a bunch of new cars get put on slow trains, industrial manufacturing is how you naturally raise the living standards across the country. If you are reliable and can stay off drugs, manufacturers will teach you how to do what they need. This is a desirable outcome for the new administration. |

It always has been and because transportation modes are the blood vessels of a society, it always will be. The people who can't handle that can go to NurseryChat and suck their thumbs.Amtrak still existed after the first Trump Administration and it will still exist after the second Trump Administration. It annoys me that people don't understand that Trump doesn't really care what we build here as long as it provides Americans more quality jobs. That means he will be happy to see more buses and trains built here. If you have a plan that is cost-effective and has transportation value, it will still go forward. Do I think it is useful that Amtrak goes to Ronkonkoma? Not really? Is it an elegant solution to lower the pressure on Sunnyside Yard? Maybe. Will LIers ride it? Absolutely. |

You can have Amtrak pick up the NYC to Hamptons market with all the Montauk trains being Amtrak trains with full cafe car service etc. A typical commuter rail operation would not go as far as Montauk to begin with. I think they may even be able to do a better job with North Fork service too. Also allows the LIRR to concentrate its diesel fleet on commuter trains like Port Jeff or Oyster Bay. |

Its "commuter" territory on the Montauk branch ended at Speonk "Also allows the LIRR to concentrate its diesel fleet on commuter trains like Port Jeff" That was tried a few years back by leasing MARC cars for PT Jeff service & sending all those bi levels to Montauk in the summer. That didn't sit very well with the PJ line riders and was never repeated. After that experiment, I thought they'd be a groundswell of howling commuters demanding 3d rail to PJ. Apparently that never happened. |

A crew change at Penn with LIRR operating the trains over their own territory wouldn't violate any work rules. You'd just have to qualify 2,000 people on the equipment. If properly executed a crew change would take only as long as the departing crew needs to get their bags. So that might not be a major obstacle unless Amtrak insists on having their people operate. |
