You can have Amtrak pick up the NYC to Hamptons market with all the Montauk trains being Amtrak trains with full cafe car service etc. A typical commuter rail operation would not go as far as Montauk to begin with. I think they may even be able to do a better job with North Fork service too. Also allows the LIRR to concentrate its diesel fleet on commuter trains like Port Jeff or Oyster Bay.
