That looks like DeWitt Cinton HS in the background. So it's safe to assume that is Jerome Yard.

That is correct.
Before Tracy Towers went up and the covered up Jerome yards, they were wide open.
As a student at DWC, many of my classrooms faced these yards. From 1962-66 I enjoyed looking out over the yards to see the various changes in equipment, from Lo-Vs to SMEE types.
My first glance at a blazing red R29 was in that yard.

Are those signals 3-head? Don't most yards have only 2-head signals, with red and yellow but no green (and no trip arms) until the yard tracks merge at the yard leads?

You're right about 2 head, 2 aspects being clear or danger.

It's possible in order to save money to install a used 3 head mast then disable or cover one aspect.

Ask Railman718 about the blue haired off the street TO who split the switches in this yard.

I have seen 3 headed yard signals where the top and bottom have red aspects and the middle able to show yellow.

This way if a bulb behind a red lens burns out, the signal has the other red lens lit.

That would be correct. Dwarf signals “jacks” are often referred to as “low home” signals and while most of them including some on the mainline for reverse moves used to have a single red and a single yellow lens, most newer installations have double red with the yellow lens in between.

That steel dust coated R-29 signed up as #2 must have been transferred from elsewhere.

Obviously they were not blazing red in this pic.
A shame the TA bought cars of various color schemes only to have them covered in dust & grime.
And then came the graffiti.

For the most part, the graffiti came once most of the fleet had been repainted into the horrible Ronan silver/blue livery. Yes it was vandalism, but in some cases, the graffiti was an improvement (though I didn't like it when the windows were covered)

No Different today with the #4. Those R142/142As cars are covered in dirt and grime most days. I know Jerome doesn't have a wash. I know back when I lived up Westchester Yd early 90's. I know they were sending #4's midday and after evening rush to go through the wash up there.

Trains from Jerome yard get sent to concourse yard ( IND lines ) which does have a wash machine. I even saw a R-17 moving around sets of Arnine cars on that yard after sunset - and I thought they could not run coupled together.

I recall seeing brand new red R-29s on the 7th Ave Exp in the Bx mixed in with other cars. I should point out that while the IRT first started using numbers in 1948, on the Flushing Line (#7) and in the mid 1950s on Pelham (#6) the didn’t become official til 1967 when the BMT and IND merged with Chrystie. Even then, it was several years before the side route signs carried numbers. The side signs only carried route names like Bway Local, 7th Ave Exp etc.

I'm confused by this. As HiV and LoV type cars were replaced throughout the 50s and 60s on the IRT, the newer SMEE cars all had end (head) signs with route numbers. It wasn't only the #6.
Am I missing something?

When I left in 1976, none of the A division cars had route numbers on the side signs. I think I may have seen one or two during a visit in 1979 or 1980 (lower case font and a route bullet)

Well, even though the west side lines had the lowest route numbers, the first lines to have cars equipped to display them were the ones with the highest route numbers the 6 and the 7. The next line to receive cars capable of displaying the numbers was the #1 Bway Exp followed by the #2, then the #5 and last, the #3. The original #9 was assigned to the Dyre Ave shuttle and late evenings when R types were used in that service, the cars displayed that number. However, since the side signs had no numbers, the trains for many years continued to be referred to by their traditional line names and not numbers.

Even after Chrystie when IRT route numbers became official, it took a few years for side signs with route numbers to be installed.

Prior to the numbers appearing on the side signs, if you didn't see the train pull in at, for instance, Union Square, you didn't know if it was a #4 or #5 until you looked at the destination, either Woodlawn or Dyre Ave. Even the last of the IRT SMEEs arrived in 1964 without numbers on the side signs, though the numbers had been in the front and back since 1948:

It was only when the curtains were replaced with the colorful mylar mixed-case Helvetica scrolls that numbers appeared on the sides.

It may not have been any of those. IRT cars began to carry route numbers on the front of the train beginning with the R-12's.

IRT subway and el route tended to follow one street for most of their
runs unlike the BMT which had multiple routings.

The first subway map to list IRT route numbers was the 1965 edition. This was the 1967 (pre-Chrystie) edition. This was probably done so that the entire system would have a uniform method of identification after the Chrystie Street subway opened.

When the rollsigns were replaced in the 70's they them added route numbers to the side signs.

The first subway map I owned was the 1967 pre-Chrystie. IIRC, the IRT lines were in black, BMT in green and IND in red (I may have the IRT and BMT colors reversed, but I'm fairly sure that IND was red). I recall there was a round icon for express stations and a small rectangle for locals.

I live a few blocks away. My wanderings over there at various times of the day will reveal some sets of Jerome cars in the Concourse Yards, but not necessarily getting a cleaning. Trains are even sent into the tunnel being sent down the IND to who-knows-where. Coney? 207th?
The cars on the 4 and the 1 are some of the filthiest. There are one or two R62A sets that have been deep cleaned and the fiberglass ends repainted bright silver. These are on the 1 line. So it can be done.

Correct, and all the lines on all three divisions were identified on the map by line name, not letter or number.

gbs: There is a typo there. The first subway map to show IRT route letters was the 1967(pre-Chrystie St) map.
