It may not have been any of those. IRT cars began to carry route numbers on the front of the train beginning with the R-12's. IRT subway and el route tended to follow one street for most of their runs unlike the BMT which had multiple routings. The first subway map to list IRT route numbers was the 1965 edition. This was the 1967 (pre-Chrystie) edition. This was probably done so that the entire system would have a uniform method of identification after the Chrystie Street subway opened. When the rollsigns were replaced in the 70's they them added route numbers to the side signs. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
