I recall seeing brand new red R-29s on the 7th Ave Exp in the Bx mixed in with other cars. I should point out that while the IRT first started using numbers in 1948, on the Flushing Line (#7) and in the mid 1950s on Pelham (#6) the didn’t become official til 1967 when the BMT and IND merged with Chrystie. Even then, it was several years before the side route signs carried numbers. The side signs only carried route names like Bway Local, 7th Ave Exp etc. |
