Well, even though the west side lines had the lowest route numbers, the first lines to have cars equipped to display them were the ones with the highest route numbers the 6 and the 7. The next line to receive cars capable of displaying the numbers was the #1 Bway Exp followed by the #2, then the #5 and last, the #3. The original #9 was assigned to the Dyre Ave shuttle and late evenings when R types were used in that service, the cars displayed that number. However, since the side signs had no numbers, the trains for many years continued to be referred to by their traditional line names and not numbers. |
