Prior to the numbers appearing on the side signs, if you didn't see the train pull in at, for instance, Union Square, you didn't know if it was a #4 or #5 until you looked at the destination, either Woodlawn or Dyre Ave. Even the last of the IRT SMEEs arrived in 1964 without numbers on the side signs, though the numbers had been in the front and back since 1948:






It was only when the curtains were replaced with the colorful mylar mixed-case Helvetica scrolls that numbers appeared on the sides.
